The database extension is. sdf, a database file that is based on the SQL Server Compact Edition and does not require SQL Server to be installed

The service-based database extension is. mdf, which is based on SQL Server services and needs to be installed on the machine running the program SQL Server (enterprise/standard/express, etc.)
