1.1 Mobile reading and its constituent elements

1.2 Indicators affecting the performance of mobile reading

There are a lot of researches on the performance index of mobile reading, and the related indexes can be divided into four kinds: main body evaluation, digital content, hardware performance and software function (see table below).

1.3 Evaluation index of reading experience in plain text articles

The purpose of this study is to provide a better reading experience for public users and to combine the current status of the product with its uniqueness in the evaluation index. The "Digital content" is open, the future will be through the operation of the recommendations, such as optimization, not within the scope of the study; Hardware Performance "as a whole depends on the user's own mobile phone terminal and hand Q version of the impact of the operation, more complex, so the current research focus on showing comfort, through the mainstream screen test results fit to different screens;" Software function "is not perfect at present, the future will be with the value of the article positioning and differential design, so the current research focuses on the layout design, that is, font, font size, spacing and other factors on the impact of reading."

The purpose of this study is to optimize the reading experience of the pure text article, and the corresponding two-level index ("*"), combined with the product characteristics, we refine the index. The display comfort of the layout design can usually be evaluated from two angles of visual performance (i.e. usability) and visual subjective preference (i.e. aesthetics). According to previous studies, the two were significantly correlated, and the higher subjective preference scores tended to identify better performance. This can also be validated from the relevance of elements that affect visual performance and design elements.

The influence of different layout design on the visual performance in certain article length is quite limited (the accuracy and time difference of the task completion is not great when the user keeps a high concentration), but it can be displayed through visual fatigue (also a manifestation after the user's attention is concentrated). In the related research of visual fatigue, the following conclusions are mainly:

A. Contrast of brightness between text and background

When the white background encountered black text, improve the text of the reflectivity, which is easy to be noticed, but the color difference is larger, long-term gaze will produce fatigue, relative gaze time is short.

The user prefers positive polarity (the text is dark, the background is light-colored), but in fact the negative polarity (text is light-colored, background is dark) more difficult to fatigue.

B. The least acceptable view of the text

Usually determined by the size of the font and the reading horizon, the laboratory measurement method is shown in the following figure. In the E-book reading test, for the near-square text (that is, the word is higher than the word width), generally acceptable minimum visual range of more than 30cm, the appropriate visual range of 50cm. The Youth group (age 20-35) "High" is at least 4.8mm (24pt), and the middle-aged group (36-50 years) is at least 5.14mm (25pt). When fixed approximate square Chinese characters high 4.85 mm and line spacing of 3 mm, character spacing for 0.61 mm or 1.21 mm will have better performance, but also will not increase visual fatigue.

To sum up, in the case of determining the font, Word color, background, font size, kerning, spacing are the main factors affecting visual performance. In addition, screen brightness, screen size, screen resolution, ambient light, reading visual range, user age, text length, reading purposes will have an impact on the user's reading experience, we will be controlled in the study.

Visual subjective preference can be evaluated comprehensively by three indicators of sharpness, aesthetics and visual comfort.

  2, research methods and prospects

2.1 Research Paradigm

This study is divided into two parts, the first part is subjective debugging, as shown in the following figure, please adjust the user on the computer related parameter values, parameters corresponding to the visual effects will be synchronized display on the phone, users need to adjust their most comfortable visual feeling.

2.2 Variable Control

This study was designed using 2*2, independent variables for reading visual range (Level 1: Customary visual range, Level 2: The appropriate visual range -50cm) and mobile phone models (horizontal 1:iphone6, horizontal 2:iphone6plus), each test through the ABBA balance sequence effect, each completed a test for subjective feedback , and rest for 5 minutes before the next test.

The use of uniform ambient light, and the iphone adaptive screen brightness, the user age from 14-35 years old, the length of each article, the distribution of typos are relatively balanced, requiring users to maintain a fixed visual range in the revision test, as quickly and as many to find typos written on the paper.

2.3 Summary and Research prospect

In this study, the visual performance of the user's subjective preference was measured under several fonts selected by the designer, which was used to determine the parameter values of the design elements such as word color, background, font size, kerning and spacing. The results of this study show that users ' visual range in mobile phone reading is more close than that of E-book reading, the average distance is 30cm, and nearly half of the users ' visual range is between 10-30cm. Screen size, visual range, age on the size, spacing, background, color and other parameters have varying degrees of influence. In addition, the font in which played a very important role (such as, Lan ting body 36-38pt, Han body text 34-36pt), different fonts in different visual range and other factors under the influence, will get different results parameters, see follow-up visual students share articles.

The font serves text reading. Whether it is the designer who chooses the font for the design of the reading, or the reader who repeatedly stares at the font because of the text reading, he or she will gradually form his own evaluation standard about the typography and the typesetting of the words intentionally or unintentionally. So we usually think that there is a general visual cognitive mentality and the comprehensive assessment capabilities that professional designers gain through long-term work experience, there may be differences, such as different individual font preferences are different, the weight of beauty and usability is different.

In the use of fonts, designers need to choose the appropriate font according to the design requirements, set the corresponding font size, kerning, line spacing, word color, and so on, to meet the cost requirements to obtain the best visual effect, this process will involve aesthetic and usability balance between. This balance is especially important when the use of the font is complex and the user is very different.

As a result, future research can have two directions:

First, from the font research, in different use scenarios, access to the user's universal visual cognitive psychology;

Second, from the mobile reading performance, the index system of other aspects of evaluation and optimization.
