The Wall Street Journal: Using social networking triple bogey

"Sohu It News" June 5, the Wall Street Journal analysis that social networking sites may be a useful tool to make their own in the workplace and entrepreneurial more value. But how do you avoid making a big mistake on a social network that might make you face a long period of time?

Think about this: you send a message to your friends from a social-networking Twitter that you're interviewing another company-and the company you're working with now finds you're looking for a job. That's too bad. Jeremiah Owyang, a senior analyst at the Market Research Institute, Forrester, said that one of the staff was just in the situation.

Owyang said the PR of the guy's company saw his message and replied, "I hope your new boss knows better how to use social media than you do."

So, yes, you have to be extra careful. If you want to use social media, here are three errors you should avoid:

1. Forget you're in the public domain.

The above story reveals an obvious truth: what you do and do can be seen by almost anyone. That means your current boss, recruiter, family--as long as you can think of it.

Fars, a social media expert, says that if you send a message at a single woman's party and have just seen a striptease, you should add extra filtration conditions. But it is best to not send any news-some topics and experiences are best not with outsiders.

Owyang said, "discretion, this is the lesson of that story." If you publish something online, you have to have a career strategy.

In other words, what you do should be intended to support your career or the company you are in.

2. Think "delete" is really deleted

Experts say a number of strategies can be used to clear your history, but it does not guarantee complete cleanup.

Owyang said that even if you delete the message or image, there will still be clues for a long time to follow.

Fars recalled that he had created a blog and later wanted to delete it because he did not show the professional image he intended to perform. So he tried to stop the web crawler using the search engine from accessing his blog content. He changed the so-called "keyword tag" (metatags), hoping that the web crawler would not display his blog content on a search engine such as Yahoo and Google. He said he thought the idea worked, but that doesn't mean that the articles would actually disappear forever.

Remember, the content, pictures, and videos you create are all on the Web server, not your computer. Which means you're not completely in control.

3. Do not insist on publishing content

The point of social media is to build relationships. If you want to use social media, at least stick to it. Many people feel the need to post articles or send messages every day, and someone publishes them three times a week. Fars will update Twitter as soon as he is free, but will not be forced to update itself every day.

Of course, the more often you use these tools the better. So you can position yourself as an expert, let your published content appear on the search engine, and create your own name.

Just remember that the internet is and has been a tool to put your strategy into practice. If it can be used well, it can play a great role. If used improperly, the consequences are worse than worthless. The final key is what you want from it and how you do it. But be sure to remember that once you put something on the internet, it will always be there.
