This is not scientific-read the journey of death

This is a very thin book. I was confused by its title at the beginning. I thought it was a metaphysical topic about the meaning of life. Later I learned that it was a masterpiece in software engineering, simply put, a death journey is an unfinished project.

 

The journey of death is a book about a project that cannot be completed. It tells us how to identify such a project, how such a project is generated, and how to deal with it.

 

"This is not scientific! Under the current human time conditions, it is impossible to achieve the project goal !" When you have such an idea, this project has begun to fill the breath of death. If you carefully plan and at least double the existing resources (Manpower and time) to complete the project, this is the journey of death!

 

There are many causes of death, but most of them are human causes, including individual factors and group interaction factors. Most of the group factors are political reasons. I don't want to mention them here. I will discuss them in detail in this book.

I am mainly concerned with individual factors, mainly because the planners are too optimistic. In my personal opinion, optimism is the nature of many people. I used to estimate my abilities too much and ignore all possible exceptions, in the end, the goal cannot be fulfilled even if it is quickly found in deadline.

So how can we avoid such optimism? I think one of the magic weapons is to rely on experience, whether it's your own experience or the experience of others. If you refer to similar experiences, you can try to avoid making decisions. What should I do if I have no experience? The second magic weapon is fast iteration. Its essence is to quickly gain experience, even if it is small, but it is better than nothing, so continuous iteration can push the whole picture from small fragments as much as possible.

 

When the discovery is a journey of death, this book provides readers with two answers. One is to flash people as early as possible and put limited life into more meaningful projects, this is not a negative idea. The book seriously expresses that it is responsible for life. The other answer is to overcome the difficulties, so more project management methods are involved.

 

The essence of project management is how to improve efficiency. Improvement in efficiency can be managed in a variety of ways, but do not forget that the project performer is a living person, and the mental state of people is more important.

There are many ways to improve efficiency, minimize irrelevant work of developers, identify project barriers, introduce tools with caution, track and promote progress through iterative tools, etc, these are all ways to improve people's efficiency. In addition to these external means, it is also crucial to motivate people's internal passion. I believe that most individuals are rational and require output to be greater than input. It is worth noting that there are various forms of output. Here we can refer to Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. It can inspire your own passion, personal development should not be poor, it can stimulate the passion of the team, the development of the team will not be poor.

The introduction of advanced management methods to improve efficiency from the outside, and the use of better ways to motivate from the heart, this is a two-pronged approach I read this book, combined with my own experience summed up.
