In recent years, image technology has been paid great attention and progress, there are many new theories, new methods, new algorithms, new means and new equipments. The image industry agrees that they need to be researched and integrated, and that this work needs to be done in a holistic framework, which is image engineering.

The content of image engineering is very rich. According to the degree of abstraction and research methods, the differences can be divided into three levels: image processing , image analysis and image understanding . three levels of image engineering

image Processing emphasizes the transformation of images to images . The image is processed to improve the visual effect of the image and to lay the groundwork for automatic identification, or to compress the image to reduce the required storage space or transmission time requirements.

image Analysis is the object of interest in the image detection and measurement , in order to obtain their objective information to establish a description of the image. Image analysis is a process of image-to-data, where the data can be either a result of a target feature detection or a measurement-based symbolic representation.

The focus of image comprehension is on the basis of image analysis , through the knowledge, experience and so on to further study the nature of the objects in the image and their mutual connection, and to obtain the meaning of the image content and interpretation of the original objective scene, so as to guide and planning action.
