To write a closed user story

When we write user stories or split user stories, it's important to write closed user stories. A closed user story means that when the story is completed, the user can achieve a clear, meaningful goal. I like to play such an analogy, complete a user story, the user can stop to rest for a while, a cup of coffee.

Here is an example of a user story that is not closed:
Take an online job site as an example: "As a recruiter, I can manage the work I post." ”

The story is so big that it doesn't make much sense. "Management" This activity is difficult to complete. For example, your company has a manager, he certainly will not say, "OK, my management is finished, it is time to do something real."

The word "management" is a clear reminder that this story is not a closed story, such as "Maintenance", "Optimization", "improvement" and so on.

Let's take a look at how to write a closed user story.

The first thing to consider is that "management" in this context specifically means what needs to be done. In an online job search site, managing published work means that I browse these job advertisements corresponding to the job application, check whether the published work has expired, delete the less suitable job application, update or revise the job description, etc.

So, writing user stories is about putting these ideas into concrete.

Above the original user story, we can write the following:

    • As a recruiter, I would expect to be able to view all the job applications that I have published for the job, and I will need to find the matching requirements to the hiring manager.
    • As a recruiter, I can adjust the deadlines for the work I post so that I can extend the time to get more applications, or to end the recruitment of the position in advance.
    • As a recruiter, I can remove inappropriate job applications so that I can avoid wasting time on these worthless messages.
    • As a recruiter, I can revise the description of the job I'm posting to help attract better job seekers to the job.

The stories above are closed stories. As a recruiter, this user can reach a meaningful goal after a story is completed. Like my previous analogy, after each story is finished, the user can take a break and have a cup of coffee. "OK, I've updated the deadlines for these jobs, take a break and have a cup OF coffee!" ”

Writing closed stories can help the team to achieve better iterations and enable agile success.
