Appendix 2:windows Web Server Performance Optimization Tips
· Before you upgrade Windows 2000, you must dismount the Inoculan, PCAnywhere, and Veritas installations. You can install Windows 2000 again after you install it.
· Execute most of your applications with the new default medium protection mode (out-of-process of the buffer pool). When the application is in the buffer pool, they share the same program, thereby reducing the memory burden. and performing the application under moderate protection is more reliable than executing applications under low protection (in-process).
· Check the event log files to find out if there is a large number of service restart scenarios on the local and remote servers. If your application often fails, performance will be very poor, but because the IISReset utility automatically performs a reliable reboot, you may not be aware of the failure.
· Perform disk collation on your server on time. After a while, the files and directories on the server become fragmented. When this happens, Windows takes a long time to access files and directories because many additional disk reads are needed to collect each fragment. · If you are using SSL, make sure that the License Logging Service is enabled, even if anonymous users are accessing your WEB server.
· Do not restart the IIS server routinely or periodically, but instead use the IISReset.exe utility. Server reboot should be a means of last resort. And if you find any blue screen errors should be reported to PSS and resolve, do not ignore.
· Use one of the following methods to upgrade IIS 4.0 to IIS 5.0┱
Rotate ┱ Upgrade a server before upgrading the entire cluster server before upgrading the other computers.
A systematic upgrade ┱ first set up a set of IIS 4.0 tests, and then perform tests on your computer before upgrading to IIS 5.0. Perform a test after upgrading to IIS 5.0 and measure performance differences between the old system and the new system.
· If possible, use the automatic installation script file to simplify the upgrade.
· If you use Visual Basic objects, you will not see performance improvements on Apartment-threaded applications or on synchronous calls that use a common domain.
· Using Index Server 3.0 in Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 requires partial changes to the registry. For related information, see the Windows 2000 online documentation.
