Use netbeans ide to remotely control Sony Ericsson devices

Using Java platform manager in netbeans IDE, you can easily install and use the tools and utilities included in various simulator platforms (such as Sony Ericsson j2_sdk.

This document describes how to use netbeans ide to remotely manipulate file systems on Sony Ericsson mobile phones supported by javatm Micro Edition (javatm me)-MIDP technology. With this function, you can view the files and MIDlet stored on mobile phones, and run, test, and debug the MIDlet created for them on devices.

Before you start, you must install netbeans ide 4.1 and netbeans mobility pack 4.1. For instructions on downloading and installing the complete environment, see the j2midp development download page.

You must also download and install the Sony Ericsson j2_sdk corresponding to the Sony Ericsson mobile phone you are using. Of course, you also need a Sony Ericsson mobile phone.

 

Add a Sony Ericsson Simulator

To add a simulator to the IDE, follow these steps:

1. Select Tools> JAVA Platform.
2. In Java platform manager, click Add platform.
3. Navigate to the directory where the Sony Ericsson SDK is installed and select the ondevicedebug folder. Click next, and then click Finish to complete the installation.

Now that the simulator platform is installed, select the Sony Ericsson platform, select the tools and extensions tab, and click Open utilities to open Sony Ericsson device explorer.

This opens the window for device explorer and connection proxy.

Use connection proxy to connect to the mobile phone. During the entire session, you must keep the connection proxy window open.

After connecting to the mobile phone, the connection proxy window displays the device you are connecting.

In Device Manager, you can view the mobile phone content, your machine, and an output window.

From the device Explorer window, you can:

• See a column of installed MIDlet
• Start, stop, pause, and resume debugging of the MIDlet
• Delete the installed MIDlet
• Manual garbage collection
• Preview MIDlet Information
• Manually delete RMS entries

In the file Explorer window, you can view the file system that the MIDlet wants to install on your mobile phone. Select the Jad or jar file to enable the mobile phone transfer icon. Click this icon to transfer files.

In future sessions, you can select Tools> JAVA Platform manager to access device explorer. Select the Sony Ericsson j2_sdk (Debug on device) platform, select Tools & extensions platform, and click Open utilities.
