Using photos to make retro-artistic effects

1, first find a picture. I found a piece on the Internet-it's nothing special, I didn't search for beautiful photos. The techniques described in this article should be appropriate for most of the photos you have on hand. What I'm looking for is a photo that doesn't have too many messy backgrounds. If it's unfortunate that your photo background is too complex, you'd better extract the subject and place it on a white background. I found that some of the retail clothing sites have the kind of pictures we need.

2, OK, when you find the picture (or get it from our tutorial page), open it in Photoshop and be sure that the image mode is RGB (menu "image > Mode >rgb"). Perform "image > Adjust > Threshold" To adjust the image's threshold. setting, I choose to be near the center, probably to the left a little bit position. If you tune to two extreme positions, you will erase all black or white images. That being the case, we should try to make as many facial details as possible.

3, OK, now the effect looks right, do we stop? I think it looks a bit jagged in some places. I want it to look like the vector work you're drawing, and it's like you didn't apply a Photoshop filter to it. So let's apply a diffusion filter to smooth the edges of the image (Filter > Styling > Diffusion), select "Anisotropic" and click the "OK" button.

4, the above operation should have some help. But it left a bit of a blur. It then executes "filter > Sharpen >USM" and uses the following settings:

Quantity =300%, radius =50 pixel, valve value =150 color order

5, OK. If you find that you like the image to be smoother, you can apply the diffusion filter again, as mentioned earlier. Now we're done with retro vector style images. But it does not look nostalgic. There's a lot of coloring work to do. Add a new layer under the image and fill it with a linear gradient from the foreground to the background color. Select RGB (r:255, g:170, B:5) as the foreground color, RGB (r:255, g:102, b:0) as background colors. Apply a gradient from the top of the image to the bottom. Now select the image layer and change its layer blending mode to soft light.

6, now we have the desired effect. Finally, under the nostalgic image layer, add a beautiful pixel pattern fill effect, below is the effect I finished.

(Translator Note: The fill pattern unit used here can refer to the following figure)

7, the following is an example of applying some other effect to increase the emotional appeal. I applied some pixel-extension techniques to the edges and used a few high-contrast colors as the background.
