After four months of suffering, "essential virtual San" was finally translated. There may be some revisions. This book will be published in May. Please support it more.
Here, I will first post my own translator's order.
Translator's preface
Two weeks ago, when the translation of this book was drawing to a close, vmworld opened in San Francisco, USA in 2014, and a shocking news came. VMWare launched the hyper-converged infrastructure Evo: rail and evo: rack.
The word "integration" has become increasingly popular over the years. Yes, networks, servers, and storage that were originally isolated from each other, and even those that were not flushed into the water, began to infiltrate and merge with each other. The speed of the merger was so fast that the word "fusion" could not hold on its own, you have to move out of "hyper-converged" to survive a while. VMware's virtual San is the core technology of VMware's hyper-converged architecture.
A few months ago, when I took over the translation of the latest book about vmwarevirutal SAN technology, I had a deep sense of attention from this technology. As an IT technology manager for a Nasdaq-listed U.S. company in China, I am also responsible for the infrastructure and data center design of the Chinese factory. Last year (2013), we deployed flexpod. This is a unified computing architecture jointly launched by Cisco, netapp, and VMWare, it cleverly uses the Cisco UCS technology to strip all server configurations and place them in the configuration file, making the server a pure box that provides computing and memory resources. However, flexpod still uses the shared centralized storage of netapp, as if VCE still needs to use EMC's centralized storage. The biggest disadvantage of centralized storage is that it is expensive. vsan uses the server's local storage and flash acceleration technology to deliver high performance while reducing the storage cost to the hard disk price of common rack-mounted servers. The impact of such low prices is enormous, and even fatal.
As charlesfan said in his preface, This is a disruptive innovation for storage enterprises ". As almost all applications, including key business applications, and server virtualization, are concentrated on the VMware platform, the application scenarios of centralized storage are gradually concentrated on providing storage for VMware. In this case, vsan can be used to replace centralized storage. A few years later, medium-and low-end centralized storage may even be discarded by the market.
I am very happy to have the opportunity to translate a book about cutting-edge technologies. At the time of receiving this task, the English version of the book was not fully finalized (the English version was published in August 2014), so I also got a lot of opportunities to communicate with the author cormachogan and duncanepping. Both authors are in the virtualization field. They each have their own blog websites and have published many valuable blog articles. I was a subscriber of their blog many years ago. It is exciting and pleasant to have the opportunity to cooperate with your idol. The translation process is also my learning process. During this process, the two authors gave me a lot of support and expressed their deep gratitude.
I would also like to thank Guan min and Wang Chunhua, editors of Chapter Hua's Book Publishing Company for handing over this book to my matchmaker. Besides, they have carefully helped me correct many mistakes. I also received technical support from Dr. Lin caixue from the VMware China R & D center and the development team under my leadership. I would like to thank you for that.
The process of translating a book is both pleasant and painful. The pleasure is because of the harvest of new knowledge and the pain is because the book is completed at the time of busy work, time is tight and I am a procrastinator, so I am often forced by a small whip to do this text work. In the end, I would like to deeply thank my wife. It is impossible for me to complete this task in time, instead of hitting your little whip.
