vSphere5.1 Upgrade 5.5 (ii)--upgrade ESXi hosts and VMware Tools

As described earlier, after upgrading from vCenter5.1 to 5.5,vcenter, we also need to upgrade VMware tools for ESXi hosts and VMS, which can be upgraded either interactively or using Updata management two different ways, Here are the steps to upgrade using Updata management:

First, install Updata management

1. Create a dedicated database for Updata management

2.Updata Management requires the use of 32-bit ODBC data sources, 64-bit systems under the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory to find ODBCAD32 programs to create a 32-bit data source

Second, upgrade ESXi host

1. Find the Updata management option on the Vcenter home page

6. The host to be upgraded into maintenance mode, if the virtual machine is located on the shared storage here need to tick check box, if it is on the local disk do not need to tick

7. After the virtual machine migration is complete on the maintenance mode host, click on the additional created baseline in the Updata Management tab

8. Click Scan, updata Management will compare the current host with the benchmark and click Fix

4. Locate the Updata Management tab, find additional options to select Upgrade Vmtools to match the host and click OK to add a benchmark

5. Click Scan to compare all the virtual opportunities and benchmarks in the datacenter to see if they are compliant, then click Repair Options, tick the virtual machines that need to be repaired

7. Select the time of repair in the schedule, which can be fixed immediately, custom repair time, or repair on restart. Note Here : Select Immediate fix, or set up a repair plan, before repair will follow the setup of Step 2 to create a snapshot, so that if there is an unexpected time can be manually rolled back, the fixed virtual opportunity to restart automatically, If the virtual opportunity is not powered on or suspended, it will be restored to its original state after the boot state has been repaired. Upgrading the VMware Tools option on restart does not take effect until the VM restarts, and the snapshot is not created before the repair. 8. Choose whether to generate snapshots and the retention time of the snapshot, follow the default options until the end, wait for the repair to complete
