What are DHCP functions?

DHCP is actually a dynamic mechanism that allows the client to request an address during boot and a centralized library to record these names and addresses. DHCP can automatically manage the addresses managed by the system. As long as we configure a Windows NT Server/Workstation computer to use DHCP, we no longer need to manually manage a large number of network names and addresses in text files. Because we no longer allocate a fixed address to a computer, so if we want to move a computer in the network, including adding or removing hardware devices and replacing the network card, in the new location, even in the new LAN system, the workstation computer will automatically find the DHCP server in the new network, and then automatically obtain an address after a certain interval.

Advantages:

The network administrator can verify the IP address and other configuration parameters without checking each host. DHCP does not assign the same IP address to two hosts at the same time. The DHCP administrator can restrict specific computers to use specific IP addresses: you can set many options for each DHCP scope: the client does not need to reset the IP address when moving between different subnets.

Disadvantages:

1. DHCP cannot identify the IP addresses that are already in use by non-DHCP clients on the network. For example, if A non-DHCP Client A on the network has manually assigned the IP address 100.53.46.5, however, the DHCP server cannot identify that the IP address has been assigned. It assigns a duplicate IP address 100.53.46.5 to the DHCP client, which leads to a conflict of IP addresses. Of course, these IP addresses can be excluded from any range configured on the DHCP server.
2. When two DHCP servers exist on the network, one DHCP server does not communicate with the other DHCP server, and the IP addresses rented by other servers cannot be identified. Therefore, the two DHCP servers should not use the same IP address in their respective ranges. In addition, the DHCP server cannot communicate with clients across vrouters, unless the vro allows BOOTP forwarding or subnet allows DHCP to be lent.
