General steps for starting Word and Excel

Summary] We sometimes encounter some problems when we trying to startup Word or Excel, we then can follow some steps to reset Word or Excel to a "clean" status.
Because this article involves modification to the registry, follow these steps to back up the registry

Enter "regedit" in the search box of the "Start" menu and press Enter. If the user account control window is displayed, click "continue ". On the left half page, right-click "computer", select "export", and save it on the desktop. This is the registry we have backed up. If any errors occur during the operation, we can double-click the import to restore it to the original registry.
When the Word and Excel programs cannot be started due to unexpected circumstances, we can take the following steps to reset the Word to a relatively clean initial state.
Part 1: Word
Word 2007:
1. Exit all Office programs
2. Make sure there are no files in the following folders:
% AppData %/Microsoft/word/STARTUP
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/OFFICE12/STARTUP
3. Open registry editor and rename the following two items (for example, rename word to wordold)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/word
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/word/Addins
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/12.0/word
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/word/Addins
4. Delete Normal. dotm:
% AppData %/Microsoft/Templates
Word 2010:
1. Exit all Office programs
2. Make sure there are no files in the following folders:
% AppData %/Microsoft/word/STARTUP
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/OFFICE14/STARTUP
3. Open registry editor and rename the following two items (for example, rename word to wordold)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/14.0/word
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/word/Addins
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/14.0/word
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/word/Addins
4. Delete Normal. dotm:
In start search, enter % AppData %/Microsoft/Templates and press enter to delete files suffixed with. dotm.
Part 2: Excel
Microsoft Excel 2007:
1. Exit all Office programs
2. Make sure there are no files in the following folders:
% AppData %/Microsoft/Excel/Xlstart
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office12/Xlstart
Open registry editor and rename the following two items (for example, rename excel to excelold)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/excel
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/Excel/AddIns
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Office/12.0/excel

Microsoft Excel 2010:
1. Exit all Office programs
