What is static routing

Static routing is a manual configuration of routing information by a network administrator. When the topology of the network or the state of the link changes, the network administrator needs to manually modify the related static routing information in the routing table. Static routing information is private by default and is not passed to other routers. Of course, network administrators can also be set up by the router to make it shared. Static routing is generally applicable to simpler network environments in which the network administrator can easily understand the topology of the network and set the correct routing information. Here are two instances that are suitable for using static routes.

In the above illustration, suppose that a network access other than Network 1 network must pass router A and router B, and a network administrator can set up a static routing information that points to Router B in router A. The advantage of this is that you can reduce the amount of data transferred between router A and router B on the WAN link, because there is no need for routing information to be exchanged between routers A and B after the network uses static routes.
In a network that supports DDR (Dial-on-demand routing), dial-up links are dialed only when needed, so it is not possible to provide routing information changes to the dynamic Routing information table. In this case, the network is also suitable for using static routes.

Another benefit of using static routes is that network security is highly confidential. Dynamic routing requires the frequent exchange of routing tables between routers, and the analysis of routing tables can reveal the network topology and network address information. Therefore, the network can also adopt static route for security consideration.

A large and complex network environment is usually not suitable for static routing. On the one hand, it is difficult for network administrators to fully understand the topology of the whole network, on the other hand, when the topology and link state of the network change, the static routing information in the router needs to be adjusted in a large scale, the difficulty and complexity of this work is very high.
