When programmers switch to sales

In my previous article, I expressed some emotion. I had a good programmer who did not do it, but switched to sales. Instead, I did not expect several friends to leave a message for me to discuss how to switch to sales. Here I will talk about my own ideas, and I also want to discuss some experiences with some of the more successful predecessors.

I think you should pay attention to a few things if you have plans or ideas to switch to sales for a programmer, after all, the salesperson and the programmer are two completely different occupations, two different occupations.

First, the income is different.

In fact, in my opinion, the difference in income includes two concepts: first, the difference in income models. It can be said that most programmers get dead wages, or occasionally have some project bonuses, then, at the middle of the year or the end of the year, we will give you a symbolic increase. Unless it is the core developer or technical expert in the company, it will basically be the same, with a fixed monthly income, there are more, less, less, and less, while sales staff are different, basically speaking based on performance. Companies have slightly different assessment methods and different forms of contract commissions, however, all incomes are tied to performance without exception. If you sign a ticket, you will have more incomes. Therefore, the income gap between various months is usually large. The second is the difference in the amount of income. Especially for sales personnel who just switched jobs from programmers, there will be a period of adaptation, and there are usually not many tickets in the period of adaptation, so this period of time can only get the basic salary, for the programmer's stable and not high low income, is not small challenge. Once started, the growth speed should be faster than the programmer. If you find that you still cannot get started after a long time, you are advised to consider other occupations.

Second, the working time and nature are different.

What are the greatest characteristics of programmers? Overtime! I think there are few people who disagree with each other, but have you ever seen several salespeople working so overtime? Of course, it doesn't mean that the salesman will not work overtime when the programmer has no rest. When programmers try to work overtime for a certain function, maybe the salesman is drinking with the customer somewhere, and the whole body is full of wine, when I had a good stomach, I had nowhere to let it go, and I had to make a smile. I thought about the second half and where the customer went so HAPPY that he could be satisfied. Sometimes, when programmers are chatting online at home, maybe your salesman is working overtime in the company to prepare the bidding documents, because the next day, the customer only gave two days of preparation for the bidding.

Every profession has its own difficulties. So when programmers want to switch to a salesman, they have to think differently. If they are sales people, Do you suffer from that kind of life?

But in general, the salesperson is more time-consuming than the programmer. After all, the evaluation is based on the number of signatures rather than the workload.

Third, customers have different perspectives.

When we are a programmer or a project manager, customers always treat you as an expert, a teacher, an engineer, and technical things you are talking about. Customers often take it seriously, after all, I have never seen a few programmers speak out and lie around. Once you become a salesman, it's just another thing. Although you are proficient in technology, you don't have to be a poor project manager. However, in the eyes of the customer, you are a sales engineer and a technical expert first. Therefore, customers often do not consider technical issues first, instead, I often wonder if it is introduced to sell your product. Therefore, in the customer's mind, the expert image you set up when you are a programmer will be greatly compromised by the teacher image.

Fourth, the mentality at work is different.

We often see on the Internet how comfortable and casual google engineers work in Microsoft engineers, flexible working hours, basketball in the company, and pets in the company, but have you ever thought about their sales staff? Are their sales staff so comfortable? I think most of these are prepared for engineers. Most of their sales staff need to negotiate contract details with customers in a suit outside. Where can they be so casual? It is also very important that the customer will not play with you in the flexible work system. During the appointment, the customer will not be late for one minute. Otherwise, there will be no credit-free performance, once the customer has a bad image, it is very difficult to sign a ticket.

Fifth, people have different attitudes.

After jumping out of the programmer's circle, I look back at the programmer. I think most programmers are simple. Of course, this doesn't mean to belittle the programmer, it's just that Programmers spend most of their energy on improving their own programs, or on endless projects, there is no time to consider the principles of so many people, so we often inadvertently offend others, and we do not know that if we meet a person with a better mentality, we will not care much about it, that's all about programmers. If you encounter a bad mentality, you will be miserable, and the consequences will be hard to predict.

Different sales personnel often have to consider these things. When you are a customer, you are often concerned about whether your competitors have come to take orders, whether the partner has any other actions, and always be careful when talking to the customer, we need to pay attention to every detail, learn how to look at the color, and do not expect every sentence to be so pleasant, but we must not offend the customer. Otherwise, the customer wants to discuss the contract with others, and you are happy to be in the dark, every day.

How do programmers make sales? I haven't figured it out. These are just some of my feelings since I switched the line for sales. I hope I can help anyone who wants to switch the line for me. Please also give me some help, let's talk about some of my views and experiences.
