If your computer is currently running Windows 8 (or Windows RT) and you want to update to Windows 8.1 (or Windows RT 8.1), in most cases you will see a free update in the prominent location of the Windows Store home page. If the application store is open but you do not see the update, it may be caused by one of the following reasons:
You may need the latest updates from Windows updates
Although you have downloaded and installed Windows 8.1 updates from the application store, your computer also needs Windows Update, or "KB 2871389", before the App Store will provide you with Win8.1.
If you use Windows Update to obtain Automatic Updates, KB 2871389 is automatically downloaded and installed.
If you have turned off automatic updates, or if you use a new computer that has not yet downloaded Automatic Updates, or you do not want to wait for Windows updates to do this automatically, you can go to the Windows Update and manually install KB 2871389.
To install the required Windows update
Use the following procedure to turn on Windows update: Swipe from the right edge of the screen (pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen if you use the mouse, and then move the mouse pointer up), click or click Settings, click or click Change Computer Settings, and then click or click Windows Update.
Click or click Check for updates now, and then wait for Windows to find the latest updates for your computer. If you do not enable the automatic installation of critical updates, you may need to click or click "Enable recommended settings before you can check for updates."
If an update is found, click or click the message that describes the number of updates that will be installed automatically. In the update list, find the name that contains "(KB2871389)" (the exact name may be different depending on your system) update.
Click or click Install to install all recommended updates in the list.
When the update is complete, you will need to restart your computer. If any desktop applications are open, save your work before restarting and turn the application off. Reboot by clicking from the right edge of the screen (pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen if you are using the mouse, and then moving the mouse pointer up), tap or click Settings, click or click Power, and then click or click "Reboot".
After you restart your computer, on the Start screen, click or click App Store, and then you should be able to see the Windows 8.1 update. (Win8 house win8e.com)
The version of Windows 8 you are running may not support updates from the application store
Some versions of Windows 8 do not support upgrading to Windows 8.1 through the application store. Includes the following versions:
Windows 8 Enterprise. For information about upgrading to Windows 8.1, please contact your system administrator.
Windows 8 Pro (if installed by an organization or program that uses volume licensing). Please contact your system administrator or the administrator of the program that is used to install Windows 8. If you are an administrator, you can find more information and links about Windows 8.1 ISO in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise assessment.
Windows 8 Pro (if installed with MSDN or TechNet ISO and activated with multiple activation keys). Windows 8.1 ISO can be downloaded from MSDN or TechNet.
Windows 8.1 Preview or Windows RT 8.1 Preview. You can still update from the App Store.
Windows Application store may not display the latest content
To refresh the content in the application store
Swipe from the right edge of the screen to the middle and click "Search".
(If you use the mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, then move the pointer down, and then click Search.)
Enter the run in the search box, and then click or click Run.
Enter Wsreset.exe in the Run command, and then click or click OK.
Restart your computer.
On the Start screen, click or click Store, and check to see if Windows 8.1 is now on the application store main screen.
