RAS is a remote Access Service program. The WindowsNT Remote Access service allows users to remotely dial in WindowsNT remote access servers via X.25,ISDN or standard phone lines as if they were connected directly to the network. With the RAS feature, users can connect to the Office's local area network at home or on business, using corporate LAN resources as if they were in the office.
For many enterprises, remote information exchange has been used very widely. Remote Access Service (RAS) is one of the most practical and powerful features of WindowsNT. Security is important when using telephone lines to transmit data, and because network administrators have no physical control over which users can access dial-up, there is a need for strong security measures to keep the network safe from unauthorized user intrusion.
WindowsNT can implement strong security options without interfering with remote access for authorized users. RAS security is often more stringent than LAN security. RAS may provide integrated domain security (integrated domain safety), Encrypted authentication and logon (encrypted authentication and registration), auditing of Remote Connection (remote connection audit), Callback Security (callback safety), allowing intermediary security hosts.
Both NT Server and NT Workstation can be used as RAS servers, but NT Workstation can only allow a remote user to come in/out, while NT Server can support 256 remote users.
First, install and configure the RAS server
1. Click Start and Settings, and select Control Panel.
2. When the Control Panel dialog box appears, select Network and select Services.
3. Click Add, and a drop-down list appears, listing the software service programs that can be added to the windowsnt.
4. Select the remote Access Service, then click Continue, and you will be prompted to put the WindowsNT on the disc, enter the disc path, click OK, and the RAS file is copied to the hard drive.
5. Specifies a serial port, RAS automatically detects the modem on the selected port, sets the port to dial out, and selects OK.
6. A window appears, setting the protocol used by RAS, for more compatibility, select the NETBEUI,TCP/IP,IPX protocol. When configured, select OK 7. The Network Settings dialog box is still open and select OK to close the dialog box.
Second, configure the WINDOWS95/98 RAS client program
1. Start Control Panel on the WINDOWS95/98 machine and select Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.
2. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click the Windows Installer tab.
3. Select "Newsletter" in "Components" and select "Detailed information."
<. In the Communication dialog box, select Dial-Up Networking and click OK.
5. After the software is installed, open "My Computer" and double-click "Dial-up networking".
6. In the Dial-Up Networking folder, double-click make New connection, the Create New Connection Wizard appears, and then click Next.
7. Enter the connection name, such as WindowsNT RAS cilent, type the connection name, select the modem, and then click Next.
8. Enter field codes, phone numbers, and country codes, and click Next.
9. Click Finish.
Third, dial-in permission and security
After you install the Remote Access Service on a windowsnt computer, you must also assign access permissions to remote users. The steps are as follows:
1. Click "Start", "program".
2. Select the Administrative Tools and remote access management utilities.
3. Select the server or domain to which you want to grant remote access permission for the user.
4. Select "User" and "license", the Remote Access Permission dialog box appears, and in the User list box, highlight the user account you want to set access permissions for.
5. Once the user is highlighted, select the check box (tick). This user account can then dial to connect to the RAS server. (Programming Entry Network)
To implement different dial-in lines and Dial-out lines, configure the COM port in the Port use box to dial out or only call back.
Iv. Server service Procedures
After a remote RAS user connects to the RAS server, he or she can either allow him to access the entire network or only allow access to the RAS server. The procedure is as follows:
1 Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel, and then click Network.
2 Select the Services tab and choose Remote Access Service. When the remote Access service is highlighted, click the Properties tab.
3 in the Remote Access Settings dialog box, click the Network button, which opens the Network Configuration dialog box.
4 Select a protocol in the dialog box, and then click the Configure button next to him.
5 at this point, you can choose to give users the right to access the entire network, or only to access the RAS server, when finished, click OK.
At this point, you can use WindowsNT RAS to work, the superiority of which is self-evident.
