To quickly get useful content from a picture, Word 2010 provides a very useful picture-processing tool-removing backgrounds. Use the Remove background feature to easily remove the background of the picture, as follows:
1. Select a picture in the Word document where you want to remove the background, and then click the format > Remove Background button in the Ribbon.
2. Enter the picture editing state, drag the control points around the rectangular border to circle the final area of the picture to be retained, as shown in the following figure.
3. When you are finished selecting the picture area, click the background clear > Close > Keep Changes button in the Ribbon, or click outside the range of the picture to remove the background of the picture and leave the rectangle in the circle, as shown in the following illustration.

Small reminder: If you want to not delete a picture background and return to the original state of the picture, you need to click the background clear > Close > Discard All Changes button in the Ribbon as shown in the figure.
You usually need to adjust the rectangle box to enclose the part you want to keep, and you can get the desired result. However, if you want more flexibility in controlling the area of the picture that you want to remove from the background, you may need to use the following tools to perform these actions when you enter the background of the picture removal:
• Click the background removal > optimize > Mark Areas to preserve button in the Ribbon to specify additional picture areas to keep.
• Click the background removal > optimize > Mark Areas to delete button in the Ribbon to specify additional picture areas to delete.
• Click the background removal > Optimize > Remove Tags button in the Ribbon to delete the areas marked in both operations.
