Headers and footers are areas of the top, bottom, and side margins of each page in a document.

You can insert or change text or graphics in headers and footers. For example, you can add page numbers, time and date, company logos, document titles, file names, or author names.

If you want to change the headers or footers that you have inserted, you can find more header and footer options in the Header and Footer tool under header and footer tools.

I don't see any header or footer design in the Style Gallery

If you do not see any built-in header or footer designs in the gallery, the build block add-in may not be available. To ensure that the built-in design appears in all Microsoft Office Word 2007 building block Style galleries, do the following:

1. Click Office button, and then click Word Options.

2. Click Add-Ins.

3. In the Administration list, select Disable Project, and then click Search.

4. Click Build Block. dotx, and then click Enable.

5. Restart Word.

Use headers and footers in non-section documents

In a simple document that is not divided into sections, you can insert, change, and delete headers and footers. If you are unsure whether the document is divided into sections, click Normal on the status bar. On the Start tab, in the Find group, click Position. Click Section, and then click Next, to find any section breaks in the document.

Insert or change a header or footer

You can insert a preset header or footer into your document and easily change the header and footer design. You can also create a header or footer with a company logo and a custom skin, and save a new header or footer to the Style gallery.

Insert the same headers and footers throughout the document

1. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Header or footer.

2. Click the header or footer design that you want.

The header or footer is inserted into every page of the document.

Note: If necessary, select the text in the header or footer, and then use the formatting options on the Mini toolbar to format the text.

Insert text or a graphic in a header or footer and save it to the Style gallery

2. Click Edit Header or edit footer.

3. Insert text or graphics.

4. To save the header or footer you created to the header or footer options gallery, select the text or graphic in the header or footer, and then click Save Selection to Header library or save selection to footer library.

Change the header or footer

2. Click the header or footer in the Style gallery.

The entire document's headers or footers will change.

Remove the header or footer from the first page

1. On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog Box Launcher, and then click the Layout tab.

2. Select the different first page check box under Header and footer.

Headers and footers are removed from the first page of the document.

Use a different header or footer for odd and even pages

For example, you might choose to use a document title on an odd page, and a chapter title on even pages.

1. On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup dialog Box Launcher, and then click the Layout tab.

2. Select the different odd and even pages check box.

You can insert a header or footer for even pages on an even page and insert a header or footer for odd-numbered pages on odd-numbered pages.

Change the contents of a header or footer

The 1th step is ditto.

2. Change the header or footer by selecting the text and making revisions, or by using the options on the Mini toolbar to format the text. For example, you can change the font, apply bold formatting, or apply a different font color.

Tip: In print layout view, you can quickly switch between the header footer and the document text. Just double-click the grayed out header or dimmed text.

Delete a header or footer

1. Click anywhere in the document.

2. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Header or footer.

3. Click Delete header or delete footer.

The header or footer is removed from the entire document.

Use headers and footers in documents that contain multiple sections

In a document that contains sections, you can insert, change, and delete different headers and footers in each section. You can also use the same headers and footers in all sections. If you are unsure whether the document is divided into sections, click Normal on the status bar. On the Start tab, in the Find group, click Position. Click Section, and then click Next, to find any section breaks in the document.

To create a section break, click in the document where you want to set the section. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Separator.

Create a different header or footer for a part of a document

1. Click inside the section where you want to create a different header or footer.

2. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Header or footer.

3. Click Edit Header or edit footer.

4. On the Header and Footer tab, in the Navigation group, click Link to previous section headerto disconnect the headers and footers in the new section from the headers and footers in the previous section.

Microsoft Office Word 2007 does not appear in the upper-right corner of the header or footer the same as in the previous section.

5. Change the existing header or footer in this section, or create a new header or footer.

Use the same headers and footers in all sections of a document

1. Double-click the header or footer that you want to keep in line with the header or footer in the previous section.

2. On the Header and Footer tab, in the Navigation group, click Previous section or next section to move to the header or footer you want to change. 3. Click link to previous header to reconnect the headers and footers in the current section to the headers and footers in the previous section.

4.Office Word 2007 will ask if you want to delete headers and footers and connect to the headers and footers in the previous section. Click "Yes".

Use a different header or footer for odd and even pages

For example, you might choose to use a document title on an odd page, and a chapter title on even pages.

1. On the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer group, click Header or footer.

2. Click Edit Header or edit footer.

3. On the Header and Footer tab, in the Options group, select the different odd and even pages check box.

4. If necessary, in the Navigator group, click Previous or next to move to an odd or even page header or footer area.

5. Create a header or footer for odd-numbered pages in the odd-numbered page header or odd page footer area, and create a header or footer for even-numbered pages in the even page header or even page footer area.
