Working Mechanism of the router after the email fails to be sent

After an email fails to be sent, the router task retries based on the value specified in the "initial transmission Retry Interval" field. The "initial transfer Retry Interval" domain is located in the server configuration document and can be found under vro/SMTP-> restriction and control-> transport control. You can specify an integer in the domain in minutes. The router controls the resend of emails based on this setting.

The Notes mail routing (router task) can send emails Based on the NRPC and SMTP protocols. If an email fails to be sent, it is saved in mail. box and waits for the router to send it again. By default, an email can be saved for up to 24 hours in mail. box. If the time is exceeded, the router task will generate a mail failure report and notify the sender that the email delivery has failed.

As mentioned above, if the email fails to be sent, the router will retry the attempt according to the setting in the "initial transmission Retry Interval. This setting takes effect for all emails. Both NRPC and SMTP mail comply with this setting.

To view the emails waiting to be sent on the server and their statuses, the administrator can use the following console commands:

TELL ROUTER SHOW QUEUE

The output sample of this command is as follows:

498) this. style. width = 498; "border = 0>

The number in the brackets after Retry indicates the number of retries.

The router works like this:

If an email fails to be sent for the first time, the router waits for the Minutes specified in the "initial transmission Retry Interval" and resends the email for the first time, wait twice the specified time in the "initial transfer Retry Interval" before the second resend, and wait three times before the third resend. Next, every re-sending will wait three times until the last 24 hours.

The default value of "initial transmission Retry Interval" is 15 minutes. The following describes the router workflow:

1. wait 15 minutes before the first resend. (The first attempt to resend the email is actually the second attempt)

2. If the first re-transmission fails, the router waits twice the time specified in the "initial transmission Retry Interval" and then resends the message again. The waiting time before this sending is 30 minutes. (The third attempt to send this email)

3. If the second re-transmission fails, the router waits three times the time specified in the "initial transmission Retry Interval" and resends the message again. The waiting time before this sending is 45 minutes. (The fourth attempt to send this email)

4. Wait for 45 minutes before all subsequent sending attempts until it reaches 24 hours.

Reducing the Domain value of the "initial transfer Retry Interval" will increase the number of re-attempts to send emails per hour, which may increase the mail routing success rate.

Increasing the Domain value of the "initial transfer Retry Interval" will reduce the number of re-attempts to send emails per hour, and may increase the waiting time of emails.

Note: The only way to reset the "initial transfer Retry Interval" value is to restart the router task. If you enter the "route servername" command on the console of the Domino server, the server will immediately try to send an email. However, if the message fails to be sent, the router will wait for the Retry Interval before trying again.
