In April 1991, Linus Torvalds, a 21-year-old student at the University of Helsinki in Finland, started working on his own operating system. 24 years ago today, August 25, 1991, he published the first announcement of Linux in Usenet's Comp.os.minix newsgroups, announcing the birth of Linux. The following is a message written by Torvalds in the year: Path:Gmdzi!UNIDO!Fauern!IRA.Uka.de!Sol.Ctr.Columbia.edu!Zaphod.MPs.Ohio- State.edu!Wupost!uunet!Mcsun!News.funet.fi!Hydra!Klaava!Torvalds

Hello Everybody out there using Minix -
I ' m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won ' t isbig and
-
professional like GNU ) &NBSP; for &NBSP; 386 ( 486 at clones &NBSP; this has been brewing
since April , and is starting to get ready. I ' d like any feedback on
Things people like/dislike in Minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(Same physical layout of the File-system (due to practical reasons)
Among other things).
I ' ve currently ported bash (1.08) and gcc(1.40), and Things Seemto work.
This implies that I ' ll get something practical within a few months, and
I ' d like to know what features most people would want . any suggestions
is welcome , But I won ' t promise I ' ll implement them :-)
Linus (torv ... @kruuna . Helsinki . fi )
PS . Yes - it's freeof any Minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is not protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
Would support anything other than at-harddisks, as that ' s all I have :-(.
In September of the year, Linux Kernel 0.01 was released to an FTP server (ftp.funet.fi) on the Finnish University and Research Network (funet). There were only 10239 lines of code at that time. By October, 0.02 had been released. If you want to dive into the Linux system novice, you can also download a German Linux software center trial.
