Gartner: Companies should consider building unlimited data centers

Strong corporate demand for it means that data center managers must plan to scale their computing and storage resources in a reasonable proportion over the year, Gartner notes. With the aid of scientific planning, enterprises can rapidly upgrade the computing capacity of infrastructure without expanding the physical area of data center, cooling mechanism or power supply, thus gaining a dominant position in the fierce market competition. "The first mistake most data center managers make is to base their assessment on existing assets and infer the future direction of resource demand based on historical patterns," said David Cappuccio, vice president of research at Gartner. There are two major drawbacks to this seemingly logical way of thinking: first, whether the existing data center space has been reasonably used is inconclusive; "To ensure maximum efficiency, the expansion potential and total resources of the data center should be calculated on a per-square-foot or per-kilowatt basis, without the ability to simply count the floor area of the infrastructure." For example, a common small data center with 40 sets of server racks has about 60% of the space utilization. If a total of 520 physical servers have an average annual computing resource expansion of 15%, the area of the data center will reach four times times the initial area after ten years. "With the push of traditional thinking and the fear of cooling hot spots, these 40 racks or 1200 square feet of floor will reach nearly 5000 square feet in 10 years, and the cost of spending naturally rises," Cappuccio explains, "as a conscious Cooling mechanism and server updates to reflect on the data center managers, we are fully able to expand computing capacity without adding a data center area, while helping the facility cope with the unlimited resource requirements from the business unit. The change in cloud computing implementation will also be one of the solutions to the growth needs of the data center, and as technology matures, more and more of the functionality originally provided by the data center will turn into a service offering in the hands of proprietary or hybrid cloud providers. This will further improve the enterprise users to maintain the data center area of the possibility of the same, resulting in significant cost-saving results and enterprise competitive advantage.
