14.8 Configuring roles

14.8.1 role

You can add roles in the cluster, which is hosted by the clusters and improves the availability of the role (service) by the cluster.

The following example configures a MSDTC (Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator, Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator) role.

The main purpose of MSDTC is to implement distributed transactions to ensure consistent cross-process communication, where the process can be two processes on the same computer or a process on a different computer. If you are only installing the SQL Server Database engine independently, you do not need to configure MSDTC. However, in scenarios where you need a distributed transaction, such as running SSIS at the same time or building a SQL Server failover cluster, you need to configure MSDTC.

For Windows Server 2008 and later versions, the clustered MSDTC is not configured to affect SQL Server 2008 and subsequent versions of the failover cluster, and SQL Server uses the MSDTC service on the local computer. Improperly configured MSDTC may affect the functionality of the SQL Server failover cluster.

Tips:

For installing a SQL Server 2005 failover cluster, the MSDTC role must be added to the cluster beforehand because the Setup wizard needs to enable transactions to control the installation progress of multiple nodes.

If you install a Windows Server 2003 failover cluster, you must cluster MSDTC. However, Windows Server 2008 and subsequent versions have redesigned the Msdtc,sql Server failover cluster to use the MSDTC service that is installed on the local computer.

14.8.2 Configuring roles

Open the Failover Cluster Manager console, expand the tree list on the left, select the Roles node, and then choose Actions, configure roles from the main menu, or right-click the Roles node and choose Configure Roles from the context menu.

On the Before you begin page, click Next to continue with the following steps.

On the Select Roles page, select Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC).

On the Client Access Point page, enter the network name of the virtual computer in the Name text box, and then configure an IP address for the virtual machine.

On the Select Storage page, select a disk in a cluster.

On the confirmation page, the configuration information for the role that will be installed is displayed. Click Next to begin configuring the role.

The Configure High Availability page shows the current progress. When the configuration is complete, it will automatically jump to the next page.

On the summary page, the configuration that has been completed is displayed. Click the Finish button to complete the configuration.

14.8.3 Confirm Role Configuration

After completing the Configure Roles Wizard, select the Roles node in the Left tree list to check the role information displayed in the intermediate details pane.

In Active Directory users and Computers and the DNS Manager console, confirm the virtual network name and IP address of the role.
