By default, each SmartArt graphic layout in Word2010 has a fixed number of shapes. The user can delete or add shapes according to the actual work, as described in the following steps:
Step 1th, open the Word2010 document window, and in the SmartArt graphic, click to select an existing shape that is adjacent to or has a hierarchical relationship with the new shape.
Step 2nd, in the Create graphic group in the SmartArt Tools/Design Ribbon, click the Drop-down triangle button to the right of add shape, as shown in Figure 2011070203.

Step 3rd contains five commands in the open Add-in Drop-down menu, representing different meanings:
Add a shape to the back: Add the same level of shape to the right or bottom of the selected shape;
Add a shape to the front: Add the same level of shape to the left or top of the selected shape;
Add a shape above: Adds a higher level shape to the left or top of the selected shape, which is not available if the currently selected shape is at the top;
Add a shape below: Add a lower-level shape to the right or bottom of the selected shape, and if the currently selected shape is at the lowest level, the command is not valid;
Add Assistant: Applies only to specific shapes in a hierarchical graphic to add shapes lower than the currently selected shape.
Add the appropriate level of new shapes as needed, as shown in Figure 2011070204.
