In 1876, the United States was still mourning the victims of the north-south war. Mrs. Anna Jarvis taught at the chapel the American Memorial Day, and told the story of the hero who died in the battle. She prayed, saying, "I hope at somewhere, at some time, someone will create a mother's day to commemorate and praise mothers in the United States and all over the world."
