Checking for missing VC runtime components with System Tools Sxstrace

Enter sxstrace at a command prompt that is run by the administrator to obtain the following help:

C:\>sxstracewinsxs tracing Utility.Usage:SxsTrace [options]options:   trace-logfile:filename [-nostop]       Enabling tracing for SxS.       Tracing log is saved to FileName.       If-nostop is specified, won't prompt to stop tracing.   Parse-logfile:filename-outfile:parsedfile  [-filter:appname]       Translate The raw trace file into a human readable Format and save the result to Parsedfile.       Use-filter option to filter the output.   Stoptrace       Stop The trace if it is not stopped before. Example:  sxstrace trace-logfile:sxstrace.etl          sxstrace parse-logfile:sxstrace.etl-outfile:sxstrace.txt

Options:

Trace starts tracing and generates a trace log file.

Parse parses the trace log file as a text file.

Stoptrace stop tracking.

How to use:

1) at the command prompt that the administrator runs, enter the following command to start the trace

C:\>sxstrace Trace-logfile:sxstrace.etltracing started. Trace would be saved-file sxstrace.etl.Press Enter to stop tracing ...

2) Start a problematic program (here is an example of a Thunder.exe)

Click OK to close the error prompt.

3) Return to the command prompt and press ENTER to stop the trace. Sxstrace.etl file has been generated, then enter the following command to parse Sxstrace.etl

Search for error, find description:

Error:cannot Resolve reference microsoft.vc90.atl,processorarchitecture= "x86", publickeytoken= "1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", Type= "Win32", version= "9.0.21022.8". Error:activation Context generation failed.

This means that the VC90 runtime is missing. Then go to Microsoft to download this runtime installation to fix the runtime dependency problem.
