1. Lena/lenna

This model is a beautiful girl named Lena. It is an illustration of Playboy in November 1972. If you don't know what Playboy magazine is, please go to Baidu.

Lena is Swedish and translated into lenna according to standard English pronunciation. The following is an example:

2. Stanford bunny

Stanford rabbit. This should be well-known. No one knows about graphics.

This model was first adopted by Stanford University and thus called Stanford rabbit. This rabbit is often used in the graphic field. It consists of 69,451 triangles, with a height of 7.5 feet. It can be used to test a variety of graphics algorithms, including Polygon Simplification, compression, and smooth surface.

With the increase in hardware level, this rabbit is already a simple model, but it still does not prevent it from becoming one of the most classic graphics models. The rabbit has been around for nearly 20 years since it was proposed around 1993.

3. Utah teapot

Utah teapot. Or Newville teapot is a standard reference object widely used in the field of computer graphics. The shape of the teapot comes from the common simple shape in life. It is made into a mathematical model and the appearance is solid, columnar, and partial curved surface.

The model of the teapot was created in 1975 by Martin Newville, an early computer graphics researcher, and a member of the Utah pioneer graphics project team.

This teapot shape contains many important features, make it an ideal choice for the testers of computer graphics at that time-smooth, with many Saddle Points and holes in the handle to make the surface loss greater than 0, to form a projection on its own, and the surface does not look distorted when there is no complex texture map.

 

4. Cornell box

The model proposed by Cornell University compares the rendered scene with the actual scene image to observe the rendering effect. The first appearance was at the Siggraph Conference in 1984, and then became famous.

The purpose of this image is that it can test many factors in the rendering process, especially those related to light, such as the ray tracing algorithm and the radiation algorithm.

 

5. Stanford Dragon

Stanford dragon. This dragon is a Chinese-style dragon, not a big lizard in the West.

This dragon model was proposed at Stanford University in 1996. It is a 3D scan of a real model, with 871,414 triangles, much more complicated than Stanford rabbit. It is estimated that a foreign friend has sent such a model to China or a Chinese student. This model is only made in China.

Like the rabbit, Stanford dragon is used to test a variety of graphics algorithms, equivalent to an upgraded version of the rabbit.

 

6. Maitreya

This is not much to be said. directly:

I don't know who proposed it, nor when it should be too early. This model is actually quite complicated. This model also appeared several times at Siggraph meetings.

 

7. Summary

In addition to the above six models, there are also many models. The first Lena model belongs to the image field, while the remaining five are in the graphic field. Nowadays, with the rapid development of technology, it is no longer difficult to convert some complex entities into computer models through scanning. Therefore, more models will emerge, but how many of them can be as classic as the Stanford rabbit?

The foreign researchers are very interesting. The model they have chosen is all strange.

For graphics research, Stanford University and Cornell University have made great contributions to the development of graphics, the Research on Computer Graphics in these two universities still represents the highest level in the world.
