2.2 Server Global Configuration

The global configuration for the SharePoint server is in Windows SharePoint Services Management Center and the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page.

2.2.1 SharePoint Portal Server Management Center

1. Open the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page from start → programs → SharePoint Portal Server → SharePoint Central Administration, as shown in Figure 2-1

This page is available for SharePoint servers: Server configuration, portal site and virtual server configuration, security configuration, and component configuration.

2.2.2 Windows SharePoint Services Management Center

1. from start → programs → SharePoint Portal Server → SharePoint Central Administration, open the SharePoint Central Administration page and click the Windows SharePoint Services link on the left in the page , enter the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration page, as shown in Figure 2-2.

In Windows SharePoint Services Management Center, you can perform virtual server configuration, security configuration, server configuration, and component configuration.

Comparing Windows SharePoint Services Management Center and the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page, you can see that there are many repetitions of the overall configuration of the server. The various configurations described below are a combination of the two.

2.2.3 Server Security Configuration

Security is critical for an enterprise information management platform, and this section focuses on the Windows SharePoint Services Security configuration. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services leverages the following elements to interact with the security of site content and affects the security of site content:

User authentication-The process used to authenticate users who attempt to access a Web site or network resource. You will use Microsoft Windows NT users and security groups (domain/user name and domain/security groups) to manage security. You cannot use distribution lists to control access to content in Windows SharePoint services because the distribution list cannot be used for authentication in Windows. User authentication for Windows SharePoint Services is based on the Internet Information Services (IIS) authentication method. When you set up your Web server, you should select the authentication method you want to use. You cannot change the authentication method by using the Windows SharePoint Services Administration tool; You must use the Internet Information Services Administration tool on the server computer to change the authentication method.
