Introduction to 2.1 SharePoint servers

When we installed SharePoint Portal Server 2003, we already knew that a SharePoint server build required three software to be installed: Windows SharePoint Services, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SQL Server.

2.1.1 Windows SharePoint Services Introduction

Windows SharePoint Services is an engine for creating Web sites that enable information sharing and document collaboration, helping to improve the productivity of individuals and teams. It is an important part of the information Worker architecture available in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, provides additional functionality for Microsoft Office System and other desktop applications, and can be used as a platform for application development.

A Web site based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 provides a place for the team to communicate, share documents, and work together to complete projects. You can create a separate Web site for each project that your team is currently working on.

You can participate in Web discussions using only one web browser. However, if you use a client program that is compatible with Windows SharePoint services (for example, Microsoft Office 2003), you can seamlessly integrate your Web site as you work so that you can save the document to the library, Edit the document in the client program and move or link the information to your Web site.

Introduction to 2.1.2 SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 connects people, workgroups, and knowledge within a business process. It unifies disparate information, facilitates collaboration on documents, projects, and other work, and renders specific applications and customizations based on the user's functional groups and organizational roles. SharePoint Portal Server works with Microsoft Windows Explorer, Microsoft Office applications, and Web browsers to help you create, manage, and share content across an organization.

Using Microsoft Windows Server 2003,sharepoint Portal server with Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, and Microsoft SQL Server SP3 integrates to create a unified portal site that connects the entire organization.

2.1.3 The relationship between Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Windows SharePoint Services simply provides a working platform for the use of software such as SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

Windows SharePoint Services provides a site for team collaboration and enables a large number of "smart spaces". SharePoint Portal Server 2003 connects these spaces with personal, intellectual, and business processes to achieve "smart enterprise."

By using SharePoint sites to create portals for individuals, information, and companies, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 leverages Windows SharePoint Services. Although these sites are specifically for SharePoint Portal Server 2003, they use the various technologies provided by the Windows SharePoint Services platform, such as Web Parts and SharePoint document libraries.

SharePoint Portal Server2003 also extends the functionality of Windows SharePoint Services by providing organizational and administrative tools for SharePoint sites. Its site registry provides an enterprise-wide way to consolidate, organize, and publish SharePoint sites. In addition, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 enables users to publish information and documents stored on the Windows SharePoint Service site to the entire company.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 also provides personal information through targeted audiences, as well as personalized and custom tools.

2.2 Server Global Configuration

The global configuration for the SharePoint server is in Windows SharePoint Services Management Center and the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page.

2.2.1 SharePoint Portal Server Management Center

1. Open the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page from start → programs → SharePoint Portal Server → SharePoint Central Administration, as shown in Figure 2-1

This page is available for SharePoint servers: Server configuration, portal site and virtual server configuration, security configuration, and component configuration.

2.2.2 Windows SharePoint Services Management Center

1. from start → programs → SharePoint Portal Server → SharePoint Central Administration, open the SharePoint Central Administration page and click the Windows SharePoint Services link on the left in the page , enter the Windows SharePoint Services Central Administration page, as shown in Figure 2-2.

In Windows SharePoint Services Management Center, you can perform virtual server configuration, security configuration, server configuration, and component configuration.

Comparing Windows SharePoint Services Management Center and the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page, you can see that there are many repetitions of the overall configuration of the server. The various configurations described below are a combination of the two.

2.2.3 Server Security Configuration

Security is critical for an enterprise information management platform, and this section focuses on the Windows SharePoint Services Security configuration. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services leverages the following elements to interact with the security of site content and affects the security of site content:

User authentication-The process used to authenticate users who attempt to access a Web site or network resource. You will use Microsoft Windows NT users and security groups (domain/user name and domain/security groups) to manage security. You cannot use distribution lists to control access to content in Windows SharePoint services because the distribution list cannot be used for authentication in Windows. User authentication for Windows SharePoint Services is based on the Internet Information Services (IIS) authentication method. When you set up your Web server, you should select the authentication method you want to use. You cannot change the authentication method by using the Windows SharePoint Services Administration tool; You must use the Internet Information Services Administration tool on the server computer to change the authentication method.
