The configuration management system and the whole change system are the important concepts in the project management, as well as the key points and difficulties in the PMP examination, and many students often make mistakes on such topics. First of all, to discuss this in detail, I hope that the students will benefit. I. Configuring the management system (Configuration Management system,cms)
A subsystem of the Configuration Management System project management system. It consists of a series of formal written procedures, which include documentation and tracking systems, and define the level of approval required to approve and control changes.
The configuration management system is the subsystem of the PMIs system. The system identifies deliverable status and directs record changes. In project management, its function is reflected as part of the overall change control process. 1. Configuration Objects
The objects you configure are either deliverables or technical specifications for each process. 2. Purpose of configuration management:
Establish an advanced method to identify and propose changes to established benchmarks in a normative manner, and to assess the value and effectiveness of changes;
Create opportunities for ongoing validation and improvement projects by analysing the impact of changes;
Establish a mechanism for the project management team to communicate the approval and rejection of changes to relevant stakeholders in a normative manner. 3. Means of configuration management
Identify and document the functional and physical characteristics of products, results, services or components;
To control any changes to the above characteristics;
Recording and reporting of each change and its implementation;
Support the review of products, results or components to ensure they meet the requirements
Note: Distinguish which is the purpose and which is the means. The distinction between the purpose and means of configuration management is a regular test center, also prone to error. 4. Configuration Management work steps:
A. Configuration identification.
Select and identify configuration items to provide the basis for defining and verifying product configurations, marking products and documents, managing changes, and clarifying responsibilities.
B. Configure the status record.
Includes the approved configuration identification Checklist, the status of the configuration change request, and the implementation status of the approved change.
C. Configuration verification and audit.
Ensure that the functional requirements specified in the configuration file have been implemented. Ii. Change Control system (SYSTEM,CCS)
The change control system is a subsystem of the configuration management system.
The overall change control is done through the change control system.
Any change request must be made formally.
The system focuses on changes in performance measurement benchmarks, such as scope, schedule, cost, and so on. Three, the difference between the configuration management system and the change control system 1. The change control system is a subsystem of the configuration management system that contains the relationship. 2. The object of concern is different:
The object of the configuration management system: either deliverable or technical specification of each process. Configuration management focuses on technical specifications.
Change control System Management object: Project and product benchmark (change). Can be the product's characteristics and performance (i.e. product range), can be to achieve these characteristics and functions of the various specific project work (i.e. project scope). The change control system focuses on changes in the benchmark.
