To break into the web developer community and better compete with Adobe, Microsoft plans to partially open source the recognized flash killer Silverlight.

According to sources of news about Microsoft's plan, Microsoft hopes to announce part of its open-source Silverlight technology at mix 07 next week to win the favor of the open-source community.

According to the message, Microsoft will launch a beta version of Silverlight, which is a plug-in of a Web browser, with this plug-in, network content providers can directly provide a wide range of video and interactive media experiences on the webpage. This technology utilizes Vista's new graphics framework Windows Presentation Foundation. Microsoft Silverlight's hypothetical competitor is Adobe's flash tool.

At present, I still don't know which part of Silverlight will be open-source, and Microsoft's PR department also declined to comment on it. On Mix 07, Microsoft's final expression series tool kits for developing RIA (rich Internet applications) will also show up. The competitor of Microsoft's expression series software is Adobe's CS3 series software released not long ago.

Microsoft's anti-traditional open-source community embracing open-source is regarded as a response to Adobe's previous announcement of open-source flex. Adobe's RIA development tools have been pressing pressure on Microsoft, and it announced that open-source FLEX will expand its user base. If Microsoft wants to catch up with Adobe, it needs to attract developers to Silverlight as soon as possible.

Microsoft held the first mix exhibition last year. It mainly targets webpage designers and RIA developers. In the RIA field, Adobe is not the only competitor of Microsoft. An advanced RIA development tool developed by Laszlo system, a small company in Silicon Valley, has provided an open-source version called openlaszlo, developers can use this tool to develop flash and Ajax-based applications.
