Introduction to the database files in the Active Directory

Active Directory database contains a large number of core basic data, should be properly protected, timely backup. The Active Directory database is a "dit"-formatted database that is the same as the database format used by Exchange Server. Before maintaining the Active Directory database, you can maintain the database as long as you stop the ADDS domain service.

Active Directory database file introduction

The Active Directory database is a transactional database system that supports rollback operations through log files, ensuring that transactions are referred to the database. files associated with Active Directory include the following:

    • Ntds.dit,Active Directory database files

    • Edbxxxxx.log, transaction log file

    • Edb.chk, checkpoint file .

    • Res1.log and Res2.log, reserved log files

    • Temp.edb, temporary database maintenance files

    • Edbtmp.log, log staging file

1. Ntds.dit

Ntds.dit as the database fills and grows, the log size is fixed at 10MB. Any changes made to the database are first written to the current log file and then to the active Directory database file.

2. Edb.log

Edb.log is the current log file. When a change is made to the database, the change is written to the Edb.log file.

when after the Edb.log file is filled with transactions, it is renamed to Edbxxxxx.log. ( starting with 00001 , and using hexadecimal accumulation). Because Active Directory uses circular logging, the old log files are deleted in a timely manner after the log files are written to the database. You can view the Edb.log file at any time, and you may have one or more Edbxxxxx.log files.

3. Res1.log and Res2.log

Res1.log and Res2.log are reserved log space files to ensure that the last 20MB of disk space is reserved on this drive . Reason for this: to provide enough space for the log file to shut down gracefully if all other disk space is already in use.

4. Edb.chk

Edb.chk is a database checkpoint file, a checkpoint that identifies the point at which the database engine needs to replay the log, and is often difficult to replicate when recovering or initializing the database. For performance reasons, the log file should be located on a disk other than the disk on which the database resides, to reduce disk contention. When you make a backup, a new log file is created.

5. Temp.edb

The Temp.edb file is a temporary file used during database maintenance to store information processed in the current process.

6. Edbtmp.log

The Edbtmp.log log file is atemporary log fill file when the current log file (Edb.log) fills up.

after the Edbtmp.log file is created, the existing Edb.log file is renamed to the next log file, and the Edbtmp.log file is named Edb.log. Because the file name is used very briefly, it is usually not visible.

7. File Location

By default, the Active Directory database file is located in the C:\Windows\NTDS"directory, such as

This article is an introduction to the database files in the Active Directory in the book Wang Shujiang, "Active Directory Management practices for Windows Server 2012." Their own level is limited, found to do not introduce it is better to refer to them a good book, and then do some auxiliary instructions.
