The most common problem for engineers is to think that "design" does not do their thing. "I am only responsible for writing the function, the UI to the art." "They often say so. The problem is, a good UI, not just art is so simple, it must be simple and easy to understand, easy to use and smooth, this is not just the responsibility of the arts, engineers must also be involved in depth.
In a wired interview, Steve Jobs talked about Apple's philosophy of design and creativity: design is a funny word. Some people think that design is "aesthetic", but of course, if you dig deeper, the design is actually "easy to use" degree. The Mac design is not in its appearance, although the appearance is part of the design. But more important, is how it works. To design a great product, you have to have a deep understanding, you have to really know what it is used for. It takes a lot of enthusiasm and perseverance to make you truly understand something. You have to chew it, not just swallow it. Most people don't take the time to cobwebs.
In contrast, creativity is actually just connecting things. When you ask a lot of "creative people" how they "think", you find them a little guilty because they don't really "think" about what they just "see". To some degree, it becomes their intuition that they can connect the things in experience and create new things. They are able to do so because they have more experience of life than the average person, or they think more deeply about these experiences than the average person.
Unfortunately, there are very few people who can really "design" and "innovate". Most of the people in the science and technology industry lack of multiple life experience, resulting in a few points to let them repeatedly see, so the end can only be a very linear approach to solve the problem, there is no way to a more macroscopic, more comprehensive perspective. You have to have a lot of life experience to really make the best design.
In other words, to have a good design, good ideas, you have to truly understand the user's difficulties, needs, desires, deficiencies, and then the same intentions to think how to help them solve the problem. It is impossible to sweeping, but you absolutely need to change the product better. Of course, if you are a big enterprise inside the small screws, perhaps you have not care, because no matter what you put your heart, meet anxious short-sighted supervisor, is casting pearls before swine. But if you are already out of business, and can not change the "Do not do my thing" attitude, then you and the head of the big business, what is the difference?
