IBM Rational ClearQuest Architecture Analysis

Author: Quietly dreaming

Abstract:IBM
Rational ClearQuest is designed according to the standard three-tier structure, including the data layer, function layer (business layer), and presentation layer. The structure and relationship of the three layers are described below.

This article uses IBM Rational ClearQuest 2003.06.00.

1. Data Layer

All IBM Rational ClearQuest information is stored in the relevant database.

The data layer of IBM Rational ClearQuest is divided into two types: ClearQuest
The database used by schema repository in the maintenance tool (SR database for short). One is the database used by schema in ClearQuest designer (called schema database ).

1.1 schema repository database

Sr database storage Schema
Repository data and various related information, including schema data contained in schema repository and group and user data in user adminitrator ..

If schema repository does not exist, create schema repository in ClearQuest maintenance tool to establish a connection between the schema repository and Sr database. The schema repository content is stored in the SR database.

If schema repository exists, you can use the new connection in ClearQuest maintenance tool to establish a connection with the existing schema repository. The original Sr database content remains unchanged.

When deleting schema repository, the SR database still exists and can be reconnected through new connection.

When moving the SR database, the source Sr database still exists.
Connection.

1.2 schema Database

The schema database stores schema information, including schema information, change information (such as defect, email_rule, and project) that you enter on the client, groups and users that operate the schema.

The schema database can be divided into production database and test database.

2. Function Layer

The function layer is the most important in IBM Rational ClearQuest, and almost all the settings are implemented at the function layer. The feature layer consists of ClearQuest maintenance tool and ClearQuest designer. There is also a web server that can be configured.

The descriptions are as follows.

2.1 ClearQuest
Maintenance Tool

ClearQuest maintenance tool(cqdbsetup.exe in the installation directory) must be configured before ClearQuest is used.

ClearQuest maintenance tool allows administrators to create and manage schema repository, user data (User databases), and connection information (connections ).

Use ClearQuest
Maintenance tool, which can be used to create (create), edit (edit), move (MOVE) Schema repository; Create (create), edit (edit), copy (duplicate), and delete (delete) connection ).

In ClearQuest maintenance tool, create or new connection must have at least one schema repository. The designer, client, and web server must connect to the schema repository in the maintenance tool.

Schema repository is literally translated as a "solution repository", that is, all the schemas in the designer are attached to a specific schema repository.

If there are multiple schema repository, You must select a specific schema repository when using designer, client, and Web server. Subsequent operations are performed within the range of Schema repository.

2.2 ClearQuest
Designer

Design Schema usage.

When entering designer, if ClearQuest maintenance tool has multiple Schemas
Repository, You must select one of them to enter the designer. At this time, all the schemas designed in the designer are attached to the schema repository for login, and all the schema information is stored in the corresponding Sr database.

Because the schema information in designer is stored in the SR database, the schema can be not connected to the schema database. However, if you need to use the ClearQuest client or the Web Client for change operation records, you must create a schema database connected to the schema.

When creating a new schema, You must select an existing schema. The new schema inherits the information of the original schema, including field and States.
And actions, forms, and so on.

For convenience, a configured standard Schema (no database connection required) can be created. All other schemas are inherited from the standard schema and can be used after simple modifications.

There are two types of Schema databases connected by Schema: production database and test database.

Test database is used for debugging when the schema is designed. After the design, if the test database corresponding to the schema is created, you can choose file-> test work from the menu to call the client to view the schema design results.

The production database is actually used. Only production exists.
You can use the client to perform operations related to ClearQuest.

2.3 Web Server

When you need to access the ClearQuest record using a browser, you must configure the Web server; otherwise, you can not install or configure web server components.

When setting the web server, if it is a hard disk partition in NTFS format, you must set the full control permission of the cache directory.

3. Presentation Layer

IBM Rational ClearQuest supports two forms of access operations: Web browser access or client access.

3.1 Web Access

After configuring the web server, you can use a browser to access ClearQuest.

You can use a browser to operate ClearQuest. You can create query and report records, but cannot create charts.

For Windows XP or Windows 2003 operating systems, you must install a Java Virtual Machine to access the recorded content normally.

A Chinese name file exists in the attachment and may not be accessible. You need to set whether to use the UTF-8 to access the URL.

3.2 Client Access

The client (clearquest.exe in the installation directory) is the program that actually performs the change process.

On the client, you can create query, chart, and report. The client can view the submitted records through the created query. For Report usage, the corresponding enterprise crystal report must be available. Set email_rule on the client.

4. Other Tools

There are other tools in IBM Rational ClearQuest, which are briefly described below.

4.1 ClearQuest export tool

ClearQuest export tool exports data from the ClearQuest database. For example, record, history, and attachment.

4.2 ClearQuest import Toolbar

ClearQuest import tool imports data exported from ClearQuest export tool.

ClearQuest export tool and ClearQuest Import
Tool is mainly used for transfer of records between different databases.

4.2 create Rational ClearQuest evaluation databases

When no schema repository is available in ClearQuest maintenance tool, you can use this tool to create a schema for evaluation.
Repository. There is a sample in the corresponding schema to view the functions of ClearQuest.

4.3 ClearQuest
User administration

ClearQuest user administration sets and manages users and user groups used by ClearQuest.

After the configuration is complete, you need to use upgrade to upgrade the database.
