With the rapid development of IP networks and applications, the next-generation network (NGN) based on the IP bearer network and Softswitch technology has been widely considered as the most suitable technology for realizing the three-in-one network. As NGN adopts a separate architecture of Call Control and media bearer, it enables operators to maximize their network potential and attract users by providing various new telecom services, and effectively reduce operating costs, thus greatly improving the market competitiveness.
Network construction and maintenance are facing three challenges
Although the NGN network has many advantages and will bring a bright future for the telecom industry, many new difficulties and challenges have emerged in the deployment and maintenance of the NGN network, including the following three aspects:
How can we ensure the QoS of the IP bearer network? The implementation of end-to-end service quality in the NGN service layer depends on the QoS Assurance of the IP bearer network, which includes indicators such as bandwidth, latency, jitter, and packet loss rate. Different types of services have different QoS requirements for IP bearer networks. As the bearer network of NGN, the IP network itself provides a connectionless service based on the best effort. Although standardization organizations such as IETF and ITU have invested a lot of effort in the research of IP network QoS, they have not yet obtained a recognized standard. In the specific network implementation, the IP QoS performance is very different. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a comprehensive QoS verification test on the IP bearer network before deploying the NGN network. After the deployment of the NGN network, QoS monitoring of the bearer network is also very important to ensure the quality of service.
How can we ensure various service quality on NGN? When the NGN speech service is a competitive product of the PSTN network, people are bound to require its speech quality to reach the quality of long-distance calls. Therefore, carriers must constantly optimize the NGN network to ensure the basic voice service quality.
How can we ensure interconnection and fast Fault Diagnosis of NGN networks? Although NGN is the development direction of the network, at this stage, it is necessary to fully consider interworking with existing networks (including SS7, PSTN, ISDN, intelligent network, and mobile network. This requires the operator to perform a comprehensive interconnection test during the construction of the NGN network to ensure forward compatibility of the NGN network.
