Sales and programmers

A salesman and a programmer go hunting bears together.

They came to the hut on the edge of the forest, started unloading from the car, moved into the hut, and prepared to catch the items required by bears in the wild this week. Sales soon get bored with these jobs, saying:

"Let's do this. You continue to unload items and everything is ready. I'll find a bear ."

The programmer nodded while sighing (he was used to selling), continued to pack, and sales quickly disappeared into the forest.

An hour later, the programmer packed up about 3/4 of things (the hut is at least clean and tidy now). Just as he came out, he suddenly heard a roar. The Bush began to shake when it was about 20 meters away. Sales rushed out. Behind him is a huge, roaring, drooling, and Walking Bear. It is twice as big as a common bear, and it is very angry.

The sale went straight to the hut, and the bear was behind his ass. The programmer quickly hid behind the stool, and as he was about to enter the door, he suddenly flashed down. The bear passed by and plunged into the hut. The sales turned and closed the door skillfully, locking the bear inside. As the bears rushed to the West in the hut, a huge roar came out.

The programmer flashed out of the stool. Sales proudly said:

"Hey hey! This is the first one. Now, you are killing it and peeling it. I will find another one !"

Two ideas

There are two ways to understand this story. Which one do you like depends on whether you are building or selling.

If you are a builder, you will think this is an excellent story, which illustrates a common problem for sales staff: They don't care about what happens after the deal is concluded. In fact, it is a hard job to complete the project. At this time, the sales switch has done other things, and he does not care about the follow-up work (and, to add, in some industries, sales often sell things that are not actually available ).

However, if you are a sales partner (like my partner, Paulina), you will have different opinions on this story. This is just another story that makes fun of sales people. It completely omits the hardships of finding the damn bear and bringing the bear back into the house.

Which one is correct? Of course, they are all correct. In the business field, you need to discover customers and sell them to customers, and also have the ability to make the purchased items. If there is no such thing, the business cannot be done.

Sales are not dispensable

Nowadays, many people who start a company have a certain technical background. In other words, they are builders rather than sellers. In addition, like all the builders, they tend to ignore sales and think that is something to consider later. secondary tasks will be solved after the problem arises.

However, sales are not secondary. I am a "Builder" myself. I have had experience doing business with competent sales, and I have also had a single-handed experience. I am confident that, finding a person -- his job is to find and find customers who are willing to give you money from the first day of your business. This is so important. If there is no such person, I cannot be a start-up company.

Sales will not appear if no one actively promotes the products, services or anything else you intend to sell. Some people dream that their products will be "just like Dropbox, or Apple II computer,, A great product like this can be turned into reality only after careful sales promotion. Apple has Steve Jobs, a generation of sales masters, and can develop the company by signing a large number of orders. Before its popularity, Dropbox did not know how many times it had adjusted its strategy to attract customers.

A few companies, such as Google, Facebook, or Instagram, have not yet determined their business models. Maybe they don't need to sell. However, this model only appears once in the world. Unless you encounter an Internet bubble, you cannot do without sales.
