I. Metadata service framework of arcims9.2
In ESRI's metadata service solution, ArcIMS and ArcSDE are an important part of the metadata service framework and a framework for creating and releasing metadata services:

1. arcIMS
ArcIMS is the host of the metadata service. It allows the client to publish metadata to the service and search for its content.
2. ArcSDE
ArcIMS configures ArcSDE in relational databases to store, index, and search for published metadata documents. when you create a metadatabase service in the administrator of ArcIMS, several tables are created in the relational database to store and index these metadata documents. Each time the client publishes a metadata document to the metadata service, a new record is added to the database table. By creating an index for metadata documents, you can search for and obtain metadata documents in an optimal way.
ArcIMS, ArcSDE, and relational database are essential components of the metadata service framework. At the same time, there are some optional components. For example, if you want to integrate the metadata service into an existing application:
3. arccatalog
Arccatalog provides tools to create metadata and publish it to the metadata service. When publishing metadata, you need to enter the user name and password, connect to the metadata service, and then copy your metadata to this metadata service. After the publishing is successful, any user connected to the metadata service can view the metadata you just released. You can also use arccatalog to search for the metadata service and manage published metadata documents.
4. Metadata Explorer
Metadata Explorer is a Web application that is included in ArcIMS web ADF for the Java platform. It allows you to search and browse the metadata service content in a web browser. Using metadata explorer, you can access your metadata service similar to accessing the Geography Network.

5. CSW Connector
Add CSW connector to your metadata service so that clients that comply with the OGC directory specification 2.0 (OGC catalogue services specification 2.0) can access your metadata service.
6. Z39.50 Connector
Add Z39.50 connector to your metadata service so that clients following the Z39.50 specifications can access your service.
7. OAI-PMH Connector
Add OAI-PMH connector to your metadata service to make clients that collect metadata directories to a central location available, such as digital libraries.
8. OAI-PMH client Harvester
OAI-PMH client harvester is a Web application that you can use to collect metadata documents from metadata directories that follow OAI-PMH specifications and publish these documents to your metadata service.
