Before March July 20, Kai-Fu Li was the top Chinese in Microsoft's position. After July 20, his new identity was revealed-global vice president of search giant Google and China president. Yesterday, Kai-fu Lee, who was in the whirlpool, received an interview with the Beijing Morning Post for 45 minutes.
This is a shocking change in the IT industry. Google and Microsoft do not hesitate to initiate large-scale litigation. Kai-fu Lee is widely known in the industry as gentle and open-minded, but he has his own insistence. In July 5, 2005, Kai-fu Lee entered the new boss's office. The first sentence was I need to follow my heart (I would like to follow my heart ).
■ Google shocked me
"Microsoft is a very amazing company, but Google shocked me." last afternoon, in an interview with our reporter, Lee Kai-Fu, who had the double identities of scientists and professional managers, the eyes are excited. That light is easy to see on students just admitted to Peking University and Tsinghua University.
REPORTER: It sounds like Google has a more passionate working atmosphere than Microsoft?
Kai-fu Lee: many of my friends I know are on Google. I was surprised to find that they are full of vigor today, like finding a fantastic home, and they seem to be enjoying work. I also want to try this magic medicine to restore my youth. It is an equal and free corporate culture-everyone can make their own voice. After an idea is created, anyone can try it, even if it is not yet a mature business model.
Reporter: What are the details that impress you?
Kai-fu Lee: Google agrees that employees should spend 20% of their time "doing what they want to do." of course, this doesn't mean going hiking or fishing, but about the company. During the interview, I asked my boss, "can I spend 20% of my time helping Chinese students ?" The boss replied: "is 20% enough? You can spend more time doing this ."
Reporter: Who is the boss talking about? How did you get started?
Kai-fu Lee: Shu, global president of Google. We met him 10 years ago. He was at Sun and I was at Apple. About six months ago, I became eager to return to China and start looking for opportunities. In the meantime, I sent an email to shu miit: "I heard that you will have a great plan in China. If it is true, I 'd like to contact you ". Soon, the contact began.
■ I don't regret it for seven years at Microsoft
To return to China, Kai-fu Lee persuaded his wife and two lovely daughters. It was a little difficult to persuade the latter, Until Kai-fu Lee promised to "buy them a big dog as soon as they arrived in China", and the two little angels immediately cheered back to China. But Kai-fu Lee still has the biggest obstacle to his career in China, because Microsoft is still angry with him.
Reporter: Sorry to ask this question. Microsoft has filed a lawsuit against you and Google on the grounds that you have violated the "non-compete agreement ". What do you think about this?
Kai-fu Lee: Sorry, you cannot answer this question. Because the lawsuit has just started and is in my current position, it is really inconvenient to make a specific statement. In this interview, I hope to clarify the misunderstanding instead of making more misunderstandings.
Reporter: Are you already in a stranger with Gates or Ballmer?
Kai-Fu Li: Well, it should not. Microsoft is a great company. It is a golden opportunity for a professional manager to work with Bill Gates. I respect them very much. I don't regret the seven years I spent at Microsoft.
Reporter: Is it true that nearly 200 Microsoft engineers have already moved to Google?
Kai-fu Lee: I just joined Google and I don't know much about this specific number.
Reporter: many members of Microsoft are friends and even students. Will anyone join Google with you?
Kai-fu Lee: I am not going to lobby any Microsoft employee to join Google.
Reporter: Is it dangerous if Microsoft WINS the lawsuit and you cannot start your career at Google?
Kai-fu Lee: I have the right to choose, select Google, and select China. Regardless of the outcome, I will not regret this option, because I have worked hard.
■ I went to Google to find a job
After the founding of Microsoft Research Institute in 1998, Kai-fu Lee will launch the second large-scale "headhunting" Operation in the Chinese scientific research community. How can he make unruly scientists loyal to his company, kai-fu Lee revealed his secrets yesterday.
Reporter: as the president of Google China, can you tell us the growth track you designed for Google China?
Kai-fu Lee: the specific plan has not yet come out, but the general direction is to hire and cultivate the best talents to provide the best products for Chinese users. Turnover is not our initial goal.
Reporter: What do you use to attract Chinese senior talents? Is it a high salary?
Kai-Fu Li: salary is one aspect. More importantly, Google is a paradise for computer scientists. The Founders love talents very much. They even invite special chefs and masseurs for their employees at the U. S. Headquarters.
Reporter: Are you going to copy these items?
Kai-fu Lee: Of course. The Institute is located in China. If you know excellent chefs, don't forget to recommend them.
Reporter: Forgive me for ending with a secular question. It is reported that because of your job-hopping, only the headhunting company has earned more than 0.1 billion US dollars in service fees. Is it true?
Kai-fu Lee: Oh, my God. I am satisfied with Google's treatment, but how can this astronomical number be reached. What's more, I went to Google to find a job and did not pass the headhunting company. (Reporter Zhang Xuguang)
