In the case of connecting to the Internet (or local area network), using Word to open a document directly on the FTP server, users do not have to download the document to the local disk, and only need to log on to the server to open the appropriate document. Before you open the FTP server document, users can add the FTP server address to the list of FTP sites by following these steps.
1. Select the "Open ..." command on the File menu to open the Add/Change FTP Location dialog box with the Open dialog box and select Add/Change FTP location in the look in area.
2. Enter the FTP address in the FTP Site name text box. If you do not need to enter a user name to log on to the FTP site, select the anonymous option, or if you must enter a user name, select the user option, and then in the Right text box, type a username to log in to the FTP server. You can specify the password to log in to this site in the Password box, and leave this box blank if you do not need a password.
3. After setting, click the "Add" button to add this address to the list of FTP sites. If you want to modify the user name or password for the FTP site, you can select the site in the list box, modify it at the appropriate location, and then click the Change button.
4. Click the OK button to close the Add/Change FTP Location dialog box. The Open dialog box displays a list of the FTP sites that have been added or changed. Select the appropriate FTP site, Word automatically connects to the remote server, and lists the directory structure of the server in the list box, in which the user can select and open a document.
Tip: Users can also enter an FTP address in the File name box in the Open dialog box to find or open a document directly.
