Google has acquired jotspot for 16 months and once stopped registering new users. Recently, Google has released this Wiki-based online service. However, the new service is almost invisible to jotspot, google rename it Google sites.
Google stripped the structured data templates in jotspot. Users now have only four templates to choose from. A standard wiki template and a dashboard template can be embedded into Google's Mini programs (gadgets ), A blog template is used to publish announcements, and a file cabinet template is used to upload files. Users can now directly use these simple templates to embed workbooks, demos, Word documents, Google calendars, and YouTube videos or Picasa albums in Google Docs.
Like Google Docs, Google sites can be used independently, shared with others, or displayed to the public. Users can choose from multiple templates (in fact, there are only four types), but they cannot customize the appearance of the site. Google claims that they will release an API to implement this function. Content editing uses a simple editor that allows simple format control.
Google sites is free to use, limited to 10 Gb space, users can also bind their own domain names with Google sites (however, according to actual tests, Chinese domain names currently do not support-translators ), you can also pay 50 US dollars a year for more services and functions. All Wiki pages have corresponding RSS to track their content changes. Old users of jotspot can still use their old platform and get support, but will eventually be directed to Google sites.
In an interview with Matthew glotzbach, Google's head of Corporate Affairs, Matthew called Google sites the Microsoft SharePoint killer because it allows business users to collaborate online without having to buy expensive Microsoft software, for the moment, Google sites is still not a Sharepoint killer, but Google Assembly revenue has accounted for 2% to 3% of the company's total revenue. In this way, it will eventually hurt Microsoft.
Postscript
According to the actual trial, Google sites features are still very limited. It neither shake Microsoft's SharePoint nor allow numerous commercial or enterprise CMS (website content management system) to temporarily wipe off the cold sweat, however, Google is Google after all, and Wiki-style online content collaboration is gradually attracting enterprise users who are willing to pay for it. This is a very huge market, so it has not exploded yet, the reason is that the over-complicated system of SharePoint makes many people who only need simple functions fear it. Google sites understands the weakness of SharePoint, and it does not exceed Sharepoint, instead, we need to compile people who have their hair wiped out in front of SharePoint.
