To use port forwarding services through an encrypted tunnel, you should define port forwarding rules for each application. This episode mainly explains how to add new port forwarding rules in a Xshell session.
How to add a new port forwarding rule on a session:
1. Open the Session dialog box.
2. Select the session where you want to edit the port forwarding rules.
3. Click [Properties] of the standard button.
4. Select [Connect: SSH: tunnel] in [category].
5. Click [Add] to open the Forwarding Rules dialog box.
6. Select the connection type in the [type] directory.
7. Enter localhost or IP address in [source host].
8. Enter the port number in [Listening port] or select the service name.
9. Enter the host name or enter an IP address for the startup server program in [target host].
10. Enter the port number that the server program waits for in [Target port].
11. Enter a description of the forwarding rule in [description].
12. Click [OK].
Comments:
If it is local forwarding, it is sent to a specific port on the destination host that is connected through the listening port of the local PC.
Remote forwarding is sent to a specific port on the destination host that is connected through the remote host's listening port. At this point the target host is mostly ' localhost '.
Dynamic forwarding, while using the same method as local forwarding, does not specify a specific target host. Dynamic forwarding uses the SOCKS Proxy protocol, and the default port number for the SOCKS protocol is number 1080th.
