Last week, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner interviewed Pando daily in San Francisco. In medium, Li Jiang, an investor and writer, summarized three important courses he learned. There are suggestions that can be heard frequently in Silicon Valley, and some ideas that are hardly mentioned by anyone. I would like to share them with you here.

1. Focus

Focus. Yes, you must have heard of this before. "Focus" is almost the mantra of Silicon Valley people. To start a company requires the full commitment of the entrepreneurs, so focusing on the entrepreneurs is especially important. However, unlike previous interpretations, Jeff also put forward his own unique views on "Focus.

During Jeff's tenure at Yahoo, Yahoo opened up a large number of businesses, including search, news, and email. Yahoo needs to manage more and more products. Later, competitors gradually entered these fields and established their advantages in various vertical fields.

Yahoo is facing a "problem" that almost all of its fields are one of the most involved. It is also because of this that it is difficult for Yahoo to choose which businesses with just-growing momentum should be abandoned and cannot focus on them.

Jeff believes that enterprise leaders need to see the development trend in the next three, five or even seven years. ask: "Can we stay ahead in this field in the future ?" If the answer is no, then the leaders of the company must take the courage to make a decision and strip these businesses out. Even today, they are still the best businesses.

Competitors in the vertical field can focus on one point, put all their time and resources into one field, and eventually surpass Yahoo.

2. Thoughtfulness

The word thoughtfulness has two meanings. The first layer is to think carefully and strictly implement the idea of anything. The second layer is to take care of others.

Inspiration is not scarce in the scientific world, but it can go further only after careful consideration. The so-called careful consideration is to thoroughly think about everything and form a problem-solving thinking model. This is not a superficial consideration, it is built on years of experience, pattern recognition, and constant repetition. Simply put, it is necessary to have a systematic and strategic solution in all aspects of work and life.

The second layer of thoughtfulness refers to caring for others. Thinking for others is an important value we have learned during our growth, but in highly competitive companies, this kind of thoughtfulness is hard to see. Jeff praised another co-founder of the company, Reid Hoffman, for always taking care of others and doing everything possible to help others. This form of thoughtfulness is a key aspect of Silicon Valley culture and creates the appearance of Silicon Valley today.

3. Compassion

Compassion. This is something you have never heard of in Silicon Valley, and is rarely valued in the business field. Ordinary people will admire their own leadership and obey the leadership with a firm attitude and a super will, but in some cases, this approach makes the company culture a mess.

Jeff gave his own concept of compassionate and compassionate leadership, giving us a fresh understanding of what a good lead is.

As a leader, you can easily add your world view to others. If they do not finish their work according to your ideas, you will be angry.

Jeff told a story about a subordinate who directly reported to him who was dissatisfied with a member of the team, so he deliberately suppressed the Member. However, this sort of suppression caused adverse consequences, other people in the team cannot work well. Jeff asked his subordinates to be more compassionate and discover the strengths of team members. He believes that this Member is in the team because of the decision of the leader. The leader should put him in a position that gives full play to his expertise, or let him leave the team completely. If a person does not perform well, the team lead has the responsibility to understand and listen to the voice of the team and solve the problem smoothly.

Within a few weeks, the subordinate reported to Jeff that after he changed the member to another position, the performance of the entire team improved significantly. At that time, Jeff realized that he may have made the same mistake to another subordinate and put his thoughts on others, in addition, my subordinates are very frustrated when they fail to complete their tasks according to their own ideas. From that day on, he understood that management needs to always be compassionate.

I am also inspired by Jeff's compassionate management. Such management is of great significance for improving the team and culture. It is easy for team leaders to impose their will on members, but it requires more patience, maturity, and self-knowledge to listen, teach, and help team members realize their own potential. Being a compassionate leader will achieve good results in the long term, but this idea has never been heard of in the fast-growing, highly competitive, and enterprising technology world.

Conclusion

Jeff answered the last question that night: "What special capabilities do you want to possess ?", Jeff did not hesitate to answer:
