After understanding the basic knowledge of the router, from the beginning of this article will be formally involved in the use of the router. This article is about the basic work before use-the hardware connection of the router.

Because routers belong to a network for the interconnection between the high-end network access devices, because the network connection may be various, so its interface type is more. For this reason, it is necessary to recognize some of the router's basic interfaces before we formally introduce the router's connection method.

First, router interface

Routers have a very powerful network connectivity and routing capabilities, it can be physically connected to a variety of different networks, which determines the router's interface technology is very complex, the more high-end routers the more the type of interface. Routers can not only connect different LAN segments, but also connect different types of wide area networks, so the router interface type can be divided into two kinds: LAN interface and WAN interface. In addition, because the router itself does not have input and terminal display devices, but it needs to make the necessary configuration to normal use, so the general router with a control port "console" to connect with the computer or terminal equipment, through specific software for the configuration of the router. Let's take a look at the router's LAN and WAN connection ports first.

1. LAN interface

According to the name of its interface, we can see that these interfaces are mainly used for routers and LAN connection, because the LAN type is also diverse, so this determines the router's LAN interface type may also be diverse. Different networks have different interface types, common Ethernet interface mainly has AUI, BNC and RJ-45 interface, as well as FDDI, ATM, Fiber interface, these networks all have corresponding network interface, the following introduces several main LAN interface respectively.

(1) AUI port

The AUI port is an interface used to connect to a thick coaxial cable, which is a "D" type 15-pin interface, which is one of the more common ports in a token ring or total line network. Routers can connect to the 10BASE-5 network via a coarse coaxial cable transceiver, but more often with an external transceiver (AUI-TO-RJ-45), to connect to the 10BASE-T Ethernet network. Connections to fine coaxial (10base-2) or optical cables (10BASE-F) can also be implemented with the aid of other types of transceivers. The router AUI interface described here is mainly used as a network for transmission media with coarse coaxial cable, and the AUI interface diagram is shown in Figure 1.

(2) RJ-45 port

RJ-45 Port is our most common port, it is our common twisted-pair Ethernet port, because in Fast Ethernet is also mainly using twisted pair as transmission media, So according to the communication rate of the port different RJ-45 port can be divided into 10base-t network RJ-45 port and 100BASE-TX network RJ-45 port two types. Among them, the RJ-45 port of the 10BASE-T network is usually identified as "ETH" in the router, while the RJ-45 port of 100BASE-TX network is usually identified as "10/100BTX", which is mainly the Fast Ethernet router product majority or the use of 10mbps/ 100Mbps Bandwidth Adaptive. As shown in Fig. 2, the 10BASE-T network RJ-45 port, and the right-hand figure shows the 10/100BASE-TX network RJ-45 port. In fact, the two RJ-45 ports in terms of the port itself is exactly the same, but the port corresponding to the network circuit structure is different, so can not be casually connected.

(3) SC Port

The SC port is what we call a fibre port, which is used to connect to a fiber, which is generally less likely to be connected directly to a workstation with fiber, typically through a fiber-optic connection to a switch with a fibre port such as a fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet. This port is typically used in high-end routers and is labeled "100b FX", as shown in Figure 3.
