Read more: Install Oracle 11g R2 RAC (ASM) on Red Hat Linux 5.4 (Virtual Machine) I. Install the ASMLib installation packageIf Oracle in Linux uses asm to store data, you can install asmlib to simplify disk management. asmlib consists of three software packages. The oracleasm-kernel-version.arch.rpm contains a kernel module which is closely related to the kernel currently used by the system. so we must use # uname-rm to check the kernel and then download a package with the same version. For RHEL5, I have installed xen and the kernel version is 2.6.18-8. el5xen. Therefore, the downloaded package is:

oracleasm-2.6.18-8.el5xen-2.0.4-1.el5.i686.rpm
oracleasmlib-2.0.3-1.el5.i386.rpm
oracleasm-support-2.0.4-1.el5.i386.rpm

Run the rpm command to install:

#rpm -Uvh oracleasm-support-2.0.4-1.el5.i386.rpm   oracleasm-2.6.18-8.el5xen-2.0.4-1.el5.i686.rpm   oracleasmlib-2.0.3-1.el5.i386.rpm

Ii. Configure ASMLib

Now that the ASMLib software has been installed, the system administrator must perform several steps to make the ASM driver available. You need to load the ASM driver and the driver file system. The initialization script/Etc/init. d/oracleasm.

Start oracle asmlib:

#/etc/init.d/oracleasm start

Creating /dev/oracleasm mount point:                       [  OK  ]

Enable asmlib:

#/etc/init.d/oracleasm enable
Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration:   [ OK ]
Loading module "oracleasm":                        [ OK ]
Mounting ASMlib driver filesystem:                 [ OK ]
Scanning system for ASM disks:                     [ OK ]

Run with the 'configure 'option/Etc/init. d/oracleasmScript. It will require users and user groups with ASM driver access points by default. If the database runs as an 'oracle 'user and a 'dba' user group, the output will look like this:

Configuring the Oracle ASM library driver.

This will configure the on-boot properties of the Oracle ASM library
driver. The following questions will determine whether the driver is
loaded on boot and what permissions it will have. The current values
will be shown in brackets ('[]'). Hitting <ENTER> without typing an
answer will keep that current value. Ctrl-C will abort.

Default user to own the driver interface []: oracle
Default group to own the driver interface []: dba
