MacBook external monitor display mode as far as I know, there are four situations:

1. Closed lid mode
Just use the external monitor display, the notebook monitor does not display at the same time can close the lid use. Display performance, this display mode is to maximize the use of video cards, the video card can focus on the external display, so the display is the best, while the monitor does not work, the heat dissipation after the lid will help, is the most common application of the external monitor.


2. Mirroring mode
is the notebook display and the external monitor both display the same full screen, the notebook lid goes to sleep state. Display performance, this display mode requires the graphics card allocation resources on two displays at the same time display, so the display is the worst, generally used in communication, lectures, meetings on the display of the results are not too much demand for places.


3. Extended Mode
Is the same picture expanded to more than two display, can realize each display display the same picture of different parts, notebook lid into the sleep state, this display mode also requires a video card to allocate resources on multiple monitors, but also less than the image mode resource consumption, so the display effect is general, Generally used in multi-screen simultaneous use of multiple programs to work at the site, due to the characteristics of the MAC program separation, this mode of use in the Mac is also more extensive.


4. Mixed mode
In the case of mixed use of mirror and extended mode, there are more than 3 display support (including the laptop's own display), this mode can be extended on two or more monitors to display one screen, while the other (or more) display image extension of the picture, this mode of graphics consumption is the highest, The effects are not particularly ideal, and are generally used in special complex situations.


Four mode Setup issues:

Preferred to look at a few modes of the preferred order, without any settings, the external monitor is the extended mode, if the Shang image mode, the mirror mode of the highest priority (that is, check the image mode, it is likely not to enter the lid mode and expansion mode), in the extended mode, the setting drag, then into the mixed mode.


1. Lid mode Setting
This mode must guarantee the external power supply, otherwise it may not be awakened. First connect the power, and then connect the monitor, next two parts, if it is a wired mouse keyboard, then close the lid directly click the mouse keyboard directly wake up; if it is a Bluetooth mouse keyboard, set in the Bluetooth settings can be awakened by the device (Bluetooth settings-Select device-Advanced-tick options) then close the lid, click on the device to wake. 2. Mirroring Mode settingThis mode is simple, connect an external monitor, set the resolution of two or more monitors in the display options (preferably set to the same, but the general system will be set automatically) and then click "Arrange", tick "mirror display" can be.
To exit the mirroring mode, remove the "mirror display" tick and note that the mirror mode does not enter the lid mode and expansion mode.


3. Extended Mode settings
This mode is the default, the external display is not checked, the mirror mode is not selected, the lid is not awakened into the closed lid mode, that is the expansion mode. In extended mode, click "Arrange" and then arrange accordingly according to the instructions.
To exit the expansion mode, simply exit the extended mode by entering the closed lid mode or by ticking the "mirror display". Note that the extended operation may need to be set on the notebook monitor.


4. Mixed Mode setting
Set three or more displays to extended mode, and then hold down the option key to drag a monitor icon to the monitor that is ready for mirroring to mirror the two displays (mirroring more of this method) releaseOption to drag the other into the extension.


Some other settings:
