Introduction to the projection function of Photoshop layer style

In this article we will learn about the projections in the Photoshop layer style, the tutorials detailing the effects and settings of the various options for the projection, which is helpful for PS beginners to learn about the PS layer style.

After adding a projection (DropShadow) effect, an outline and the same "shadow" of the layer's contents appear below the layer, which has a certain offset and is offset by default to the lower right corner. The default blending mode for shading is a multiply (Multiply), opacity 75%.

The options for the drop shadow effect are:

Blending mode (Blend mode)

Color settings (colour)

Opacity (Opacity)

Angle (Angle)

Distance (Distance)

Extension (spread)

Sizes (size)

Contour (Contour)

Noise (Noise)

Layer Knockout Shadow (Layer knocks out Drop Shadow)

Blending mode (Blend mode) because the color of the shadow is generally dark, this value is usually set to "multiply" without modification.

Color settings Click the Color box to the right of the blending mode to set the color of the shadow.

The default value for opacity (Opacity) is 75%, which is usually not required for this value to be adjusted. If you want the color of the shadow to appear darker, you should increase the value, otherwise reduce the value.

Angle (Angle) to set the direction of the shadow, if you want to fine-tune, you can use the right-hand edit box to enter the angle directly. In the circle, the pointer points to the direction of the light source, and obviously the opposite direction is where the shadow appears.

distance (Distance) The offset between the shadow and the content of the layer, the larger the value set, the lower the angle of the light source, and the higher the contrast. It's like the sun shines in the evening when the shadow is always longer than the noon.

extension (spread) This option is used to set the size of the shadow, the larger the value, the more blurred the edge of the shadow, can be understood as the light scattering degree is higher (such as incandescent), conversely, the smaller the value, the edge of the shadow more clear, like a searchlight irradiation. Note that the unit of expansion is the percentage, the specific effect is relative to size, and the setting value of the extension is only within the range of pixels defined by size, and if the value of size is set relatively small, the effect of the extension is not obvious.

size This value can reflect the distance from the content of the source, the greater the value, the larger the shadow, indicating that the light source is closer to the surface of the layer, conversely, the smaller the shadow, indicating that the light source distance from the surface of the layer farther.

Contour lines (contour) are used to further set the shadow section, the height of the contour corresponding to the shadow of the dark ring, the lower corresponding to the shadow of the bright ring, you can interpret it as a "section diagram." If you don't understand the effect of the contour line, you can empty the check box before the layer knocks out the shadow, and you can see the effect of the contour.

Let's say we design a contour that contains two peaks and two troughs.
