"Open-source software" can be commercialized, and "open-source software" can also be selected ". The purpose of "open source" is to facilitate knowledge sharing, the commercial operation aims to transform software code and documents at the "knowledge" level into software products that meet the social needs of commodities, so that knowledge can be converted into real productivity as soon as possible. However, from the United States to Europe to China, open-source commercialization is significantly different.
Larry Augustin posted an article on his blog, "Comparison of commercial open-source software in Europe and the United States". Academician Ni guangnan recently extended the content of this article at the 2009 China IT technology trends and product innovation conference hosted by it168, he gave a keynote speech entitled "Comparison of commercial Open Source Software in China, Europe and the United States.
Academician Ni guangnan believes that it is wrong to regard open-source software and commercial software as commercial software rather than commercial software. The differences between open-source commercialization in China, Europe, and the United States are described in six aspects, pointing out that China has more reasons to support and promote open-source software than other countries.
Here is an excerpt from Academician Ni guangnan's speech:
I. Main reasons for adopting open source software
In the United States, the main reason for adopting open source software is the cost.
In Europe, costs are still important, but the "open source" feature of open source software is even more important. In particular, there can be multiple vendors (to avoid being locked by individual vendors) and the development direction that can support and influence the plan.
In China, the biggest significance of open-source software is self-control and information security, followed by multi-vendor and low cost considerations. The "Open Source" feature of open source software is more important in China than in Europe.
2. Main drivers for creating open-source Business Software
America is a commercial benefit. In the United States, venture capital drives the development of open source software businesses. There is already a large and successful private software business in the United States, and the goal of the United States is to build the next generation of software companies.
However, this is not the case in Europe. There, a natural desire is to build a local software industry, and open source software provides such an opportunity, which is the main motivation for them to adopt open source software. The EU also supports this feature.
In China, the situation is close to that in Europe, and China also hopes to establish a local software industry. This is not only a requirement for economic development, but also a requirement for information security, china has a greater impetus to develop the software industry than Europe, which is the main motivation for China to adopt open source software.
Recently, according to the National Medium-and Long-Term Scientific and Technological Development Plan outline (2006-2020), the "nuclear high-key" special project has been implemented, among them, "basic software products" include operating systems, database management systems, middleware and office suites, and they are closely related to open-source software. For example, the special operating system to be developed is compatible with the open-source software Linux and complies with the Linux open standards. It is also developed independently and combined with open-source software, it is developed based on open-source software. Other basic software supported by the core-High-foundation major program is also closely related to open-source software. Therefore, the State supports the development of independent basic software, that is, the support of open-source software. As long as the open-source software is combined with Chinese software talents, it can become independent and controllable software (or service ).
Iii. Dual-license business model
In the United States, a dual-license-based business model (or license source code again under a commercial license, or sell a value-added commercial version based on open-source software) is very common.
But in Europe, such a model is not accepted. In the United States, CIOs prefer to obtain open-source software from a vendor with a commercial license.
In China, vendors also adopt a dual-license business model, but users are generally not familiar with this. They obtain open-source software from the vendor, but do not care about the license they use.
