1, do not use the color command

2, the use of black and white adjustment layer

Most photographers treat photos as black and white as their first choice. Execute menu command "layers > New adjustment layer > Black and white", we can choose from the top preset pull-down menu to simulate the traditional photography filter features of various settings. For example, the red filter can limit the brightness of blue in black and white conversion, make the blue sky deeper, white clouds become more prominent.

3, set the adjustment

You can adjust the shading of each color in black and white by using the slider below the black and white adjustment panel. Click the Finger tool at the top left of the adjustment panel and drag the mouse around at any point in the photo to set the shading in a more intuitive way. We can use this way to easily crush the blue sky, get wonderful cloud details, or use this way to brighten green leaves and so on.

4. Shooting in RAW format

The raw format allows for the highest imaging level of the camera and can also be used to adjust photos using the convenient Adobe Cameraraw. The Black and white adjustment option provided by ACR is very similar to the Black-and-white adjustment layer, selecting the hsl/grayscale subpanel from the right panel, switching to grayscale, and then using the slider below to control the light and shade performance of the different colors. In fact, ACR offers a better black-and-white adjustment than the black and white adjustment layer, because it provides 8 adjustment channels, and the latter only provides 6.

5, Raw file separation tone

The separating hue is a post-processing method which adjusts the color of the high light and shadow of the picture independently. There are a number of ways to achieve similar effects in Photoshop, but if you are shooting in RAW format, you must not miss the setting options that are provided by the split Tone section when you adjust your photos in ACR. In addition to helping us adjust the color tendency of the high light and shadow parts independently, it can also control their hue and saturation respectively.

6, the use of color balance adjustment tone

After the conversion of black and white, add a certain color to the screen to enrich the level of the picture. Perform layer > New adjustment layer > Color balance, first move the bottom slider of the High light section to the yellow direction, set to-40, and then move the shadow part of the slider to the blue direction to +20 to get the classic yellow/blue tone effect. You can also adjust the corresponding slider settings according to your own ideas.

7, simulated wet plate printing effect

Want to have a wet plate printing effect similar to the top right, and don't have to stay in the darkroom for a few hours. Use the methods described above to process your photos in black and white, then follow the layers > New adjustment layer > Hue/saturation command, check the shaded marquee, and then set the hue to 30, saturation to 15, and lightness to 0. After adjustment, also need to add a little particles to the screen. Select the background layer, and then follow the filter > Texture > Particle command to select settings that match the features of the screen. We use the setting of strength 20, contrast 50, particle type general.
