The logical volume relies on the device mapper (DM) kernel driver. For example, there is a logical volume group in Rhel with a logic volume root, the corresponding device is/dev/rhel/root. The symbolic link/dev/rhel/root points to the/dev/dm-<number> block device node. The assignment of number is continuous, starting from 0. Each logical volume has another symbolic link in the/dev/mapper directory, named/dev/mapper/rhel-root.
Logical volumes can often be accessed using either a reliable and consistent symbolic link name, because the/dev/dm-<number> name will vary from one startup to another.
