The 4.0 official edition of Samba is released, the first free software to support Microsoft's Active Directory!
Samba 4.0 includes an LDAP directory server, a Heimdal Kerberos authentication server, a secure dynamic DNS server, and all remote call procedures that implement the Active Directory. The 4.0 version provides all the support for Microsoft's Active Directory-compatible domain controller, which includes the latest Windows 8.
Samba, a free software, is used to link the Unix-family operating system to the SMB/CIFS (Server message Block/common Internet File System) network protocol of the Microsoft Windows operating system. In the current version (V3), not only can you access and share SMB folders and printers, you can also integrate into Windows Server's domain, act as a domain control station (domain Controller), and join Active Directory members. In short, the software sets up a bridge between Windows and the Unix family of OS, making both resources available.
