Many people suffer from troubles when installing VMware Tools, which may lead a lot of time, including myself. Therefore, I want to write down the problems and solutions I have encountered and hope they will be helpful to beginners.
My virtual machine version is vmware workstation ACE (6.0.2 build-59824), and the client operating system is fedora 9.
Here I just want to talk about a problem that occurs when you configure VMware Tools (execute./vmware-config-tools.pl under/usr/bin. The prompt is as follows:
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/Usr/src/Linux/include]

The kernel-devel software package is missing.
The kernel-devel package must be consistent with the kernel version. Check my kernel version. The command is as follows:
Uname-R
Show that my kernel version is 2.6.25-14. fc9.i686, so the package I need should be a kernel-devel-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.rpm.
Check whether the software package has been installed. The command is as follows:
Rpm-Qa | grep kernel-devel
What if it is not installed? First I found in the installation CD file (Fedora-9-i386-DVD.iso), unfortunately, did not find the software package containing the keyword "kernel-devel. However, there are seven software packages containing the keyword "kernel. I checked that I only installed three of the seven software packages. So I installed the remaining four software packages. Restart the client operating system and run the./vmware-config-tools.pl under/usr/bin, and the problem persists. It seems that non-installed kernel-devel software package is not acceptable.
Some netizens said that executing the following command can help you install the kernel-devel package:
Yum-y install kernel-devel
I tried. No. The reason is that the client operating system under my virtual machine cannot access the Internet.
What should we do? You can only download it from the Internet (the file is not large, about 5 MB ). But how can I access and install the software package downloaded in Windows in Linux? I thought of a way to convert the "kernel-devel-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.rpm" file in Windows to an ISO disc image file, and then set "virtual machine/Setup/hardware/CD-ROM ", select use ISO image and point to kernel-devel-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.rpm.iso under the corresponding directory ".
To convert a file to an ISO image file, you need to download the software ultraiso. This is not detailed here.
In this way, after the client operating system is started, attach the disc first. The command is as follows:
Mount/dev/CDROM/mnt/CDROM
To switch the path, run the following command:
CD/mnt/CDROM
You can use the LS command to see if "kernel-devel-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.rpm" exists. Then install the software package. The command is as follows:
Rpm-IVH kernel-devel-2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.rpm
Then restart the client system.
Execute./vmware-config-tools.pl under/usr/bin, the problem no longer exists.

Search online to find the simplest method, that is, when you execute the installation command, add the "-d" parameter, indicating automatic installation. The command is as follows:
/Vmware-install.pl-d
I have tried this method. However, I do not recommend using this method, because there are some options that you cannot choose, such as display resolution. If the default options are different from your actual ones, the display effect will be poor.

I have practiced the above process and hope it will help beginners. I am also a beginner. If anything is wrong, please correct me.
I personally feel that VMware Tools is really a tough task, a great test of human patience, and a great stimulus.
There is a long way to go. Only perseverance can you enjoy the joy of success.
